returnee
HelloDoes anyone have any experience of somehow reserving the parking spaces outside your house if you are moving house and a large removals lorry will be turning up??We are moving to a road here which has no parking restrictions, which apparently makes it more difficult because there are no bays or spaces which can be 'suspended' ...?I have been trying Southwark Council all afternoon ... someone said I needed to give 7 weeks notice for a 'temporary traffic order' but it seems to me that this is more like if you are having a street party than just moving house?! He gave me other contact numbers but I just got a load of ansaphones ...I can't be the first person in the area to be having this problem so would be happy to hear from anyone with a similar experience ...Thanks Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/20857-space-for-removal-lorry-outside-house/ Share on other sites
Sue
So far as I recall, when I moved back here, I spoke to all the nearest neighbours and agreed with them that I could reserve a sufficiently large space outside the house for the van. Possibly a couple of them might have parked their cars outside, to be moved when the van arrived, otherwise the space was marked out with bins.I think the key thing is to get your new neighbours onside well in advance? Not sure if the bin marking out thing is actually legal, mind you ..... savage
HiI'm afraid there is nothing you can do to officially suspend parking through the council. Your best option is to speak to your neighbours and explain the problem, perhaps they can help you by parking there cars outside your house the night before / in the morning and then getting them to move them when the removal van turns up. Failing that you can always position your bins in the desired parking area with a notice on explaining why they are there. People are usually pretty understanding in these circumstances as we've all had the issue when moving into the area.Welcome to the area & good luckKate Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/20857-space-for-removal-lorry-outside-house/#findComment-506048 Share on other sites
returnee
Thank you Sue and Kate and thanks for the welcome :-)Many thanks for the experiences and tips ...Both neighbours are elderly and don't have cars and we don't know anyone else yet :-)The max we could muster would be two cars but the removals firm says they need four cars worth ...And it seems that some people just leave cars or vans in the road here for days / a week without moving them ... so if that happens we'd have a problem ...Not that I'm getting stressed about the move or anything :-)One removals company suggested moving our stuff in two Lutons rather than one big lorry so maybe that's the way forward ... Sue
returnee Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> > Both neighbours are elderly and don't have cars> and we don't know anyone else yet :-)> xxxxxxxMaybe this could provide the perfect opportunity for you to introduce yourselves to the other neighbours, by asking whether they could block the space for you? Though maybe you might not be able to do that if you don't live near enough at the moment? But I'm sure the removal people must be very used to this kind of problem. Worst comes to the worst, I guess they would have to double park? SteveUK1978
We called Southwark, got through to someone eventually and you can get some sort of parking suspension notice for moving house. We were told it needs to be in place for 7 days and it is actually not enforceable (i.e. if someone is actually parked there then tough) but figured it was better than nothing. We even got told how much it would cost and sent in a cheque to pay for it - was about ?30 from memory. Nothing ever happened (no notices ever went up) and the cheque never got cashed! On the day I was watching the road like a hawk and positioning our car and various bins to save the space. Luckily it was mid-week so there is usually a bit of space on our street. Good luck! Otto
We have put bins out for arriving new neighbors with signs explaining a moving van is coming. And moved cars into placeholding spots. If you make up a few signs to tape on bins and go around to a few houses and ask if anyone could help and loan a bin - give them a sign...it will work out. Our street diabolical for parking but it has always worked somehow for everyone with the combo of bins, cars, ans understanding neighbors... ziggy
Perhaps if you give the road name only, there may be a couple of people who live there with cars who might PM you and you can make a plan? tiddles
shove a polite notice on windscreens of cars parked outside the house a day or so before = make it really friendly and lighthearted and I am sure people will be helpful. one often sees bing reserving a space and if they have a sign saying skip or removal lorry then I think people think that is absolutely okbest of luck with the move Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/20857-space-for-removal-lorry-outside-house/#findComment-506179 Share on other sites

returnee
Many thanks for all the messages ...!Mr Barber has kindly offered to do some digging at the council so we'll see if he comes up with anything ...Otherwise I was thinking along ziggy's lines ... offering people some dosh for leaving their car there for the day! It's Bellenden Road by the way ... usually fine for one space, but four would be unlikely and the main problem is people who leave their cans or vans there for days at a time ...Oh and the removal lorry/van is coming from Belgium by the way (coming home after 12 years!) hence why it's not so straightforward ... Am over the moon to be moving home though and loving East Dulwich and this Forum already!Look forward to meeting some of you some time!Best wishesEsm? ladywotlunches
Hi EsmeWill there be someone moving out of the building on the same day? If so they will have the removal van problem earlier in the day and can leave bins/ironing boards/boxes out when they are done perhaps Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/20857-space-for-removal-lorry-outside-house/#findComment-506215 Share on other sites
returnee
Hello ladywotlunches ... unfortunately not ... our friend who was living in the house moved out a few months ago and we've been renovating (and dealing with a damp problem!) since then ... I think James is on it though ...! jonny vantastic
I'd go for the 2 Luton option if it's a hassle. It's how we do 'big' moves. By big I mean 3-4 house as I am only a little guy. But 2 lutons, you just have to park and unload one at a time so the other one can park anywhere while it waits...
