*Bob*
Why don't more people go on holiday in the UK?Is it because it costs too much?Because no-one knows where anything good is?Because of the weather?Because it doesn't feel like a proper holiday? TillieTrotter
I'm not sure thats true at all Alan. I have had some marvellous holidays in Britain but some total wash outs. Also, it is VERY expensive to holiday here. I'm neither ignorant or competitive and those sort of statements are just rubbish especially coming from someone who flys to NZ. So There!! *Bob*
Hee HeeAs a matter of fact I have been the Maldives - some time ago. Although unusually my (then) girlfriend and myself just booked a flight there and sorted something out when we arrived. It was a terrible shame, seeing little portions of the resorts slowly disappearing under the Indian Ocean as the sea level rose a metre or two. We did wonder what could have been causing it - as we jetted home. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2068--/#findComment-59416 Share on other sites
Alan Dale
Funny *Bob*.Nice one TT.I am not someone who flies to NZ. I am a reformed flier and now only fly for work. Also I went to NZ on a round the world ticket which is less wasteful than a specific trip. The comment about people being competitive is a reflection of the fact that none of the constituent motivating elements of a trip to the Maldives necessitate a trip there. If people want warm weather and all you can eat catering they need not go beyond Cyprus. Therefore the only reason they do is to show off to their hairdresser or similar... *Bob*
Yes.. I can't really 'recommend' a trip to the Maldives, as such. It was everything I ought to have expected, only less. The only really memorable part was having my credit card declined as I was settling up at the end of one of the weeks stays.. seaplane revving engines ready to depart.. all the other passengers on board.. and me, red-faced, having to make a $200 phone call to my bank to ask what the problem was.It has been (to date) my only incursion in the dubious territory of the 'all inclusive' - though there is another looming large (thanks to a group of friends who have already booked). I'm looking forward to doing some UK camping once *Bob* Junior is a leetle older. It will be a debacle, of course, but I think it will be fun. Alan Dale
Sounds good. Can I bring the Dales?Where's Seany Mac? I thought your Maldives and aerpolanes point would have been a great vehicle for him to demonstrate the self destructive nature of capitalism.. TillieTrotter
*Bob* I used to take my very little ones camping and it was alot easier than I would have imagined. I'm really up for some camping this year as havent done it for quite a few years now. There's a great place I used to go in Dorset when the kids were tiny. There is nothing particularly worth visiting the island for, other than to see loads of penguins come up on to the beach each day. However, this does attract a massive tourist influx!I just went there for a rock festival and missed the penguins. cookie
AlanBeing a Cleethorpes lad like yourself, I too can recommend the seals. We also take the kids to see them when visiting The North, although we were turned away one Christmas as it was too busy!Completely agree about people not making the most of the UK for holidays, although Mrs Cookie would take a little more convincing :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2068--/#findComment-59504 Share on other sites

Keef
Cornwall has one of the most beautiful coastlines I have seen anywhere, I love it down there. However, holidaying in England is not cheap, and I can totally see why people will fly to warmer places where they will get a better hotal with a swimming pool for their money, and cheap booze! Brendan
I have only lived in England for 6 years and I quite often meet locals who have seen considerably less of this island than I have. I do however like getting away to warmer climes. I'm lucky though as I have family in Turkey, South Africa, Australia and California so I always have an excuse and accommodation.
