I just completed the online form adding comments as to why I want the current 40 route to remain. Anyone who uses Southern knows how unreliable the rail service can be and this bus route is a an efficient way to get to London Bridge, that or bike or cab !


Don?t wait until it?s gone.

I?m completely opposed. I live in the ward that James is a councillor, one I voted for and posted leaflets through many doors for, so I hope he pays attention.


My partner depends on the 40 to work in a homeless project near LB. without the 40 his already long shifts would be longer due to lack of transport options. The 40 needs to remain the same.

I'm also completely opposed to this change. There needs to be a direct bus service from ED to London Bridge.


Also it seems perverse that they propose that the new route would go along Blackfriars, when elsewhere in the consultation they argue that there are already too many routes along Blackfriars.

Great to see many saying they've completed the consultation. Please spread the details to friends and family to maximise responses. I've personally responded against this change and will be doing so on behalf of the local Lib Dems.


People decide where to live in a balance of public and private transport options to live, work and play alongside work, school and recreation considerations. A number of people will be here in East Dulwich based on where buses can take them. For many changing buses to get from East Dulwich to wherever wasn't part of the equation. So these proposals will have a huge impact on many for no obvious gain - if you wanted to travel directly by bus to Clerkenwell you probably don't live here.


Background is the 2016 London mayoral elections all candidate knew that the government subsidy for London public transport was going to be massively cut. The current mayor knew this and also made an election commitment to freeze fares without mentioning the method of achieving this - beware politicians offering freebies. He was relying on Crossrail being delivered on time, which is forecast to generate almost ?1bn of revenue pa, filling that subsidy cut. Sadly the London Mayor and TfL have screwed up and Crossrail is now 9 months late and expected to be delayed further. That's a loss of revenue of ?125 for every resident of London pa. This has create huge extra pressures to cut services to fulfil that election promise.


So these bus changes, on top of the already reduced no.40 and 176 bus route frequencies, are part of trying to fulfil that election promise and save money for TfL to avoid fare rises.


But their are other ways to see money. The London Mayor has a number of different organisations - TfL, Met Police, London Fire Brigade to name the obvious ones and they don't share back office function, supplier contracts, or offices, etc. I'm amazed no effort is being put into this sharing.

It is hard to draw from this thread any conclusion other than widespread and vehement opposition to changing the number 40 bus route. I would hope our local elected representatives don't let their shared politics with the Mayor get in the way of strongly representing local people's views.
The 40 would have a tiny advantage connection to Farringdon for Crossrail/Elizabeth line when it eventually opens, but to send a well used bus from ED to Clerkenwell Green where not much happens before then is a waste of resources.

First time reading this thread for a month or so since I last made a comment. Interesting to see that the unanimous opposition to this idea is viewed as "mixed feelings." I hope that Councillor McAsh will take an opportunity to raise the local community's concerns publicly rather than waiting for the outcome of the consultation.


Interesting comments from James Barber re TfL's funding. Didn't spending money that we haven't earned yet almost bankrupt the country in the late 2000s, leading to that shameful "I?m afraid there is no money. Kind regards ? and good luck!" note? Now London has done exactly the same thing.

Don't fall for this - the bad debt that caused the 2008 crash was financial implements to do with property speculation etc which were wrapped up and sold on. If anything it was lack of regulation - but politicians didn't seem to understand what was going on.

Anyway this government has just spent a little by the sound of Spreadsheet Phil.

Guy's is now main cancer treatment centre for SE London. Recently diagnosed, I know that I will need to use 40 rather than train to get to outpatients for chemo. Shorter walk to bus stop, no need to change and pretty much guaranteed a seat make it the only realistic alternative to a cab.


If you're fit and well the train to lb is faster if more expensive. It's a completely different prospect if you're unwell or just slow on your pins

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis - would the 42 be any help to you? Get on at Sainsbury's, ED station or outside ED hospital, if you get off at Druid Street you're less than half a mile from Guy's cancer centre (which I know can seem a marathon in the midst of chemo). Wishing you a swift and full recovery.

It is really quick and easy to fill in the consultation (https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/central-london/?cid=central-london-bus-consultation), and you have until Nov 9 - why not just do it quickly now so you don't have to kick yourself after Nov 10 for not having done it in time?

    • The issue must be everywhere at the moment. I was visiting a friend last week in Bermondsey, think we were walking  down Linton Rd & we dodged 7 dog poos. It was disgusting.

Yes, the Companies House filings are overdue — but from what I’ve gathered, this seems likely to be an accountant or admin issue, not some sign of ill intent. A lot of small, community-based organisations face challenges keeping up with formalities, especially when they’re focused on immediate needs like food distribution. Let’s not forget CityHive is a not-for-profit, volunteer-powered CIC — not a corporate machine. As for the directors, people stepping down or being replaced is often about capacity or commitment — which is completely normal in the voluntary and community sector. New directors are sometimes appointed when others can no longer give the time. It doesn’t automatically mean bad governance — it just means people’s circumstances change. CityHive’s actual work speaks volumes. They buy most of the food they distribute — fresh produce, essential groceries, and shelf-stable items — and then deliver it to food banks, soup kitchens, and community projects across London. The food doesn’t stay with CityHive — it goes out to local food hubs, and from there, directly to people who need it most. And while yes, there may be a few paid staff handling logistics or admin, there’s a huge volunteer effort behind the scenes that often goes unseen. Regular people giving their time to drive vans, sort donations, load pallets, pack food parcels — that’s what keeps things running. And when people don’t volunteer? Those same tasks still need to be done — which means they have to be paid for. Otherwise, the whole thing grinds to a halt. As the need grows, organisations like CityHive will inevitably need more support — both in people and funding. But the bigger issue here isn’t one small CIC trying to make ends meet. The real issue is the society we live in — and a government that isn’t playing its part in eradicating poverty. If it were, organisations like CityHive, The Felix Project, City Harvest, FareShare, and the Trussell Trust wouldn’t need to exist, let alone be thriving. They thrive because the need is growing. That’s not a reflection on them — it’s a reflection on a broken system that allows people to go hungry in one of the richest cities in the world. You’ll see the real organisations and people receiving food, sharing thanks, and showing how far the impact reaches. Even Southwark Foodbank has received food from CityHive — that alone should speak volumes. So again — how does any of this harm you personally? Why spend time trying to discredit a group trying to support those who are falling through the cracks? We need more people lifting others up — not adding weight to those already carrying the load.
    • Well, this is very disappointing. Malabar Feast  has changed its menu again. The delicious fish curry with sea bass no longer exists. There is now a fish dish with raw mango, which doesn't appeal. I had dal and spinach instead, which was bland (which I suppose I could/should have predicted). One of my visitors had a "vegetable Biriani" which contained hardly any vegetables. Along with it came two extremely tiny pieces of poppadom in a large paper bag.   This was embarrassing, as I had been singing Malabar's praises and recommending we ordered from there. The other mains and the parathas were OK, but I doubt we will be ordering from there again. My granddaughters wisely opted for Yard Sale pizzas, which were fine. Has anybody else had a similar recent poor (or indeed good!)  experience at Malabar Feast?
    • Another recommendation for Silvano. I echo everything the above post states. I passed first time this week with 3 minors despite not starting to learn until my mid-30s. Given the costs for lessons I have heard, he's also excellent value.
