I live in a 5 flat house-conversion. We're all single. We all have one each (inc the green and brown ones = 3 each) You can have at least one of ours as it's now nigh on impossible to move the cars up the driveway and frankly, they spoil the look of the front garden.

I just tried to crush a Stella can.

After struggling for some time, I gave up.

All that happened was I got a slightly squashed can which frankly took up almost the same space as if I hadn't bothered.

Perhaps you could give us some tips as you are such an expert, Horsebox?

Never claimed to be 'an expert' Sue, but it's a flimsy can and if you're really struggling to work out how to crush it then you're better off getting a bigger bin.

'Welcome to East Dulwich, where our residents make recycling more difficult than it should be!'

I've always crushed cans and cereal boxes, cat food boxes, tetra paks, e.g. fruit juice cartons, as wouldn't fit in my bin otherwise - even before the blue bin.

I find it quite therapeutic and it doesn't take much force to crush a can or box!

I think one of the main reasons the blue bins are filling up is that the council haven't actually been collecting them!

We had our new bins beginning of October and both fortnightly collections post then were missed. I rang 3 times and eventually someone came out and emptied just ours which I was quite cross about as I told them specifically that none of the bins on our street had been emptied in over a month and were all full. I've yet to see them come out on the specified date..

Yes, it's a nonsense, if someone complains of a missed collection, the council doesn't seem to bother that other people's in the street might also have been missed, even if they're told.

Hey Horsebox, it could have been the mercury in my physics lessons - see the flu jab thread :))

Going hard across the middle is a schoolboy error.

1. Small dent in the middle

2. Fold top and bottom down from the ends.

Last week I was off work a few days sick so I heard the bin collection come by I think Thursday, my blues bin had been brimming a few days and I'd started to wonder how frequently they're meant to come and empty it.

After they'd passed by I got out of bed and popped out front to have a look. Bins had all been moved.

Green bin was half-full as before, blue bin was completely full as before, brown bin was empty as before.

So the bins had been moved, presumably by a bin man (I could see the wagon moveing 30 yards up the road).

I decided to go ask the garbage guys which bins they're meant to be emptying, I could see all greens and blues being loaded on to the wagon ahead. As I got close to wagon I checked a couple of blue bins in folks' front yards and they were full so I thought well maybe the blues I'd seen being emptied were actually greens and it was just the sunlight and my sleepy state that confused me.

Leter I found a couple of my neighbours HAD had their blues emptied but only where they were half or less full (it was not a full quantitative survey, but that seemed to be the pattern..).

Could it be they knew they had no room for loads of full bins for recycling and were hoping to please MORE customers by emptying less than full bins ?

I guess I will have to empty my blue bin into bin liners and carry it up to sainsbury's recycling.

KK, one lot of bin people have already been round today, I guess you're probably on the same rota as me (Tuesdays, brown and blue today?).

Hope you're feeling better btw.

    • We have been patients at Sternhall Lane for years. Our experience has generally been incredibly positive with speedy responses and very helpful staff. We are generally fortunate to get a same day appointment should we really need one either at Sternhall Lane or at Tessa Jowell and any necessary referalls have been swift.
    • @Alice if left might have been stolen/taken by someone (peed on by a dog or fox), also there are some little things attached of - I assume - sentimental value. I hope the owner can claim them. Will leave a note indeed with info how to retrieve them, though not with a private phone number in a public space 😅 Maybe a friend of a friend will come across this post on EDF.  @embob97 They do have a ring, sorry.
    • Agree but not so great for the independently owned cafes shops etc.
    • My husband goes to the newish one near the Watchpolisher on Lordship Lane.(sorry cant remember name-) I can assure you they're not 'fake'  He started going there because his excellent long-term barber had to rent a chair there when the shop he used to work from in Forest Hill closed. I think one needs to be careful when making statements like that above as it can damage reputable buisnesses. Also I should add the Barbers I mention always seems to be busy
