The thing is about vegetarian cookery (of which I do a reasonable amount) is that you have to work so much harder to achieve flavour - when at the back of your mind you know that a few small cubes of pancetta will fix everything.

SJ - does it REALLY matter if there's the odd drop of pork fat in home-style cabbage or aubergine ?

I mean, you probably couldn't taste it and it's not a main ingredient.

I, also, don't know if there IS prok in these vegetable dishes.

I also am unsure of the correct terminology. Just like Confucius, I like to get this right.

'veggie' smarts of veggetarian food for 'veggies' but NOT for meat eaters.

'vegetarian' sounds like it's food that has no meat in it. Which anyone is intended to eat.

Is there a subtle difference between the two ? The usage makes me think so. 'Veggie' seems to have some kind of 'ownership (it's OUR food) attached to.

Don't get me wrong, I'll eat what I like regardless, but I think the ownership thing is stoopid.

genuine question - I must have missed something.

Regarding the pork fat (theoretically) in the 'home-style cabbage', if you can't taste it or see it and animals weren't specifically killed as an ingredient for it, isn't it ethically OK to eat ? Especially if you can't taste the fat ?

Pakistanis had their name shortened, but it didn't comprise of 'ie', just the 'i' after the 'k'.

It was (is in some places) a collective term including India, Bangladesh, and, for some abusers of the term, folks of African origin.

The only reason a meat-eater would fear a vegeterian would be if they thought the campaign in their postcode was going to remove their preferred cuts from local restaurants, I reckon. As in foie gras..

He's right you know - veggie's have had their rights removed for hundreds of years. Overrun and taken against their will from their homeland they were sold into slavery, and traded like animals without basic human rights.

Even now they suffer from the legacy of that persecution, frequently locked by tradition into ghettos with little social interest, suffering systematic institutionalised discrimination.

There are even political parties generating a groundswell of support in more carnivorous parts of the country who believe them to be destroying British culture, stealing women, and living on the dole.

I've heard of veggies getting attacked on the street by gangs of youths searching for any plausible target.

Police still stop them on the street searching for peelers.

Veggies have had it hard... BUT they are at last reclaiming 'the word'.

If one were to judge by these veggie threads, I'd have to conclude that animal products are where humans get our sense of humour from.

I generally don't make a habit of quoting Homer Simpson, but I think he summed it up when he sang "You don't make friends with sa-lad. You don't make friends with sa-lad".

Ah ted, don't take it so seriously. I'm a veggie. I don't feel persecuted. Us veggies are much better catered for in this world than we used to be. The 'V' sign on packaging comes to mind. Wonder who thought of that? Probably a carnivore.

Bless ya. I used to love Food for Fiends in Brighton, I'd go there after caning it at the Zap club all week-end.

With my eyes swivelling in thier sockets I'd point at a the trays of delicious veggie food on offer, then stuff my self with a spoon of it ( maybe two )

And then afterwards I'd have a massive sh*t.

Which was nice.
