Looking for Cookery Classes

I use to attend a cookery class in Peckham (now the Thomas Carlton Centre) but classes were cut, maybe if enough people are interested they could be reinstated.


Morley College use to run several different courses ? vegetarian, Italian, bakery, cake decorating, but courses were cut. Again, maybe if enough people ask for classes to be reinstated they would do a rethink.


Lambeth college in Brixton run courses in World Cookery and Cake Making and Baking. Classes start September (full when I applied) and November (places vacant when I applied beginning of September).


I have been trying to find a decent cookery class for years ? Brixton was the nearest and cheapest.

We were thinking of starting some classes up but as both Graham and I are chefs and not teachers we keep putting it off!


Is there anything in particular that you are wanting to learn? A specialist canape class, dinner party class, kids food - probably good at that already! or maybe technical skills, seasonal food class - what to do with Kale!!

There are often baking classes on Groupon, I've been to a cupcake class before and it was fun, as well as a pattisserie course which was interesting!


It cost about ?12 for 3 afternoon classes, if I remember correctly, but the woman who ran the class offered discounts on people who wanted to sign up for her other classes. Worth keeping a look out for until something crops up.

Perhaps people could do some sort of cooking skills exchange? I did a Japanese home-cooking course this year which I thought was good - but it was pricey and maybe not entirely worth the money (though we have had some yummy japanese dinners at home since!).


I find the ones where you learn to make specific dishes are of limited use since you can follow a recipe anytime - it's really the hands-on tips and tricks you need to learn! The best course I think I've ever done was a knife skills one - I've also made bread a few times following videos and instructions on t'internet but that is one area where I probably would benefit from a class!

The course I did in Peckham was called international cuisine. One of the students taught us to cook a West African stew which was absolutely delicious.


Maybe an exchanging of skills is the way forward. Anyone interested in learning to cook any of the following African/WestIndian food.


Breadfruit

Green bananas

Yams

Cassava

Plantain

Yes - I'd love to! I walk past all those stalls in Peckham every day without buying anything and feel like it's a wasted opportunity to cook something interesting. I've only ever bought and fried plantain really.


I'm not especially good at making these things - but I can at least share a couple of pointers on how (you're supposed) to make things like tempura, agedashi tofu and gyoza.


And if it's inspiration Helena's after, then maybe we could also do a few recipe exchanges around particular themes?

if anyone does kick off this 'exchange of skills/we all teach each other' idea, -please count me in. I would've been happy to organise something but with a small child and work being done on the house i can see that that would be a thing too far! I don't know that i'm a fabulous cook, but i can do some interesting vegetarian morroccan things, and i make a mean crepe...

Did anything come of this thread? I'd love to join a cookery course if any are now up an running in east Dulwich or peckham. Or if there are any chefs out there who have the skills but no time to organise venue etc I am happy to try and sort the admin side! Lizzie

Would anyone be interested in a cooking class for Indian food? I live in ED and passionate about cooking food.

I did something similar last year in my house for some of my colleagues who used to love the aroma of my lunch box

I taught them how to cook a couple of recipies, we then had the meal together with some wine. It was such a good afternoon and a great way of getting to know new people as well. Do lemme know, if there is sufficient interest I would love to have one next week on a week day 12ish.

We recently did a great pasta-making course at Bellatonis in Brixton Village. It was just the two of us plus the chef. We made handmade pasta, cooked it and ate it - in less than 2 hours.


We really enjoyed it - and have been making our own pasta ever since (as my waistline can show!)

There are class based courses run locally from ?70 for adults, but I thought my husband would prefer a private lesson in our kitchen. For ?90 (excl. ingredients) they cooked up an absolute feast. Aubrey tailored the lesson very much to what my husband wanted to get out of it - Basic chopping / carving skills, making a good stock, white sauce, liver parfait, creme br?l?e etc...

There is a fab school in petts wood near orpington, bit of a trek but the teacher is great and you use the best ingredients and take home plenty of food. You also get to drink wine while you are cooking which is the best way to cook. Its the the Buttermilk barn cookery school and I have been on about three courses now.

    • Well hello Manor men, I went to PM from 74-79. I was in O and Churchill. I can’t remember my tutor but do remember a number of bods. I’ve read a number of posts here about PM and recognise some things. Mudway was an arse. Hardly ever changed his suit.  Guys I remember are Alan Palmer, Wayne Peck ( had an older brother at the school and I think lived Peckham Road, Longleigh House), Owen McClery, Junior Gayle(Wing Chung master), David Banton , Steven Green ( I think he had green eyes), Rodney Evelyn, David Barton, Raymond Gillman (deceased), Neil Warner, Horace Marshaleck (deceased), Steven Watson (two years younger) I have a picture somewhere of the school winning a cross country event against other schools in the South London Press I think.  Teachers - Miss Pugh, Mr and Mrs Webster, Mr Thomas, New French teacher 1978/79 Miss Anspach, Mr Baugh, Mr Nelson, Mr Patel, Mr Sparks, Mr Dowse, African PE teacher, hard as nails, Mr Fenton for careers, Mr Kemel Also, my brother attended Adrian Lewis, a year younger.  
    • One gentleman who kept the boards up to date with community notices i.e. local residents' association events, East Dulwich Community Centre, sadly died a few years ago. He never had the keys to the NX Rd board as this was outside his ward (now known as Dulwich Hill). The council changed the locks on the boards and we do not know who was given the keys. The gentleman's widow carries on with posting community notices but only on the odd couple of boards whose locks have been broken and she can lift the cover. If I remember correctly, it was the Lib. Dem councillors in ED that initiated the boards.
    • Thanks, that’s very sensible advice  and I’ll most likely follow it. I shouldn’t need anything from them, and if anything, they may end up needing me as they’re likely to go first. Really appreciate your support.
    • Hi Jason - we had very difficult neighbours at some stage. Differently so from yours - aggressive, drinking fairly heavily etc… I tried to accommodate their many demands (and their huge dog who howled all day and used our garden as his toilet) until one day, I just started ghosting them. Cut off contact entirely, blocked their mobile phone number, ignored them when they tried to speak to me. I point blank refused to deal with them, including when they needed my signature to extend the lease to secure their new mortgage, which really panicked them. This proved highly effective and they moved soon after (after I made them sweat to sign the freehold docs they needed) I don’t know if you want to do the same if there is a personality disorder involved. But if you do, make sure all your paperwork is in order and there’s absolutely nothing you need from them.  I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s really unpleasant.
