Take your kids to the Freecycle Sat July 28th

Recommended Posts

Southwark Cyclists are leading a ride to the London Freecycle which is a brilliant opportunity to get the whole family together to experience the fun and freedom of cycling on traffic-free roads in central London. It?s part of a festival of cycling led by the Mayor of London. You don't have to have kids. You can just come. https://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/events/freecycle/

Our feeder ride starts at 10am outside the cafe in Peckham Rye Park. Residents will already be well aware that the cafe is closed for renovations. But nevertheless that's where we are meeting. The postcode is SE15 3UA. In better news the new playground beside the cafe is open for action and sometimes there is a coffee van.

The ride has set off surprisingly punctually in the past. It?s slow because I am glad to say that lots of kids come. There will be a pick up point under Peckham Arch near the Pulse and the Library if that suits you better and another at 10.30am by the Park Life Cafe in Burgess Park. The official address of the cafe is 3 Chumleigh St, SE5 0RJ. Another way of thinking about it is that it is beside the big playground just off the Albany Road and has lots of toddler-sized fountains outside it.

This (by now very large) group will join the Freecycle route at Southwark Bridge and there will be a ride back to Peckham from there at 3pm. It's all led by Werner and a squad of highly trained marshals to keep everyone safe. They will be using Quietway 1 which is a gem.

It's all free. You don't need to register or pay. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safer cycling in London. Everything we do is free. Our website is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk

    • We also just used Paul and his colleauge Damien to replace some fans, fix loose kitchen light, and check smoke detectors.  Straight forward, skilled and very decent guys.  Even tolerated some heckling from the kids.
    • Went past yesterday there was one man skating. It was a good use of a derelict site, but hopefully it won’t be if Southwark Council  and Dulwich estates sort it out. Compulsory purchase anyone?
    • The younger (and some older) people have taken an unused unloved space and made it their own. Where do we think young people should go? I was involved in a campaign with a group of younger people a few years ago to get a skate park built. I was so shocked by the backlash and nastiness from a vocal 'adult' few. The young people themselves said that they are told they shouldn't spend all their time on screens and yet when they come together and do something that is physical that involves socialising and positive connection they get slated for it. The skating community is so welcoming and supportive. Come on people - see the bigger picture and the positives. They've made a good place to be out of nothing - they are recycling and building and being creative and social and entrepreneurial. I suggest we reflect on what the real issue is here. Have a look at this -
