edhistory
Landscape illustrations of East Dulwich of this period are rare. This one has some puzzling features, especially on the sky-line.Anyone care to speculate?John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19730-peckham-rye-common-and-homestall-farm-landscape-1861/ Share on other sites
silverfox
Is the church in the top right the former church at the top of Barry RD (now a hostel)? mikeb
I think Emmanuel Church was completed in 1877Stanford's map of c. 1862 might help: http://www.motco.com/map/81006/19.asp?page=19Seems like the view is uphill i.e. facing south east. Could it be something to do with the cemetry or maybe Friern Manor? What are the poles / structures in the centre?Mike Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19730-peckham-rye-common-and-homestall-farm-landscape-1861/#findComment-477459 Share on other sites
silverfox
Stanford's map shows a church marked on Camberwell Cemetery so it could be that if the view on Surrey Rifles print is looking south east Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19730-peckham-rye-common-and-homestall-farm-landscape-1861/#findComment-477472 Share on other sites
computedshorty
Guessing,It might be Dawson's Hill, it places the Church of St Peter at the right angle, the Riflemen are firing into the Ranges slightly to the left, the pole on the hilltop ( highest point ) will be have been used for Semaphore Signelling ( Messages sent with Flags ) Nearby would be the Fire Beacon. The Maquee is of the First Surrey Rifles. It does appere that the Church was built long before the houses were built and occupied by a future congregation. edhistory
Following on from mikeb, and to help with the speculation, a clearer scan from the Stanford map of the sky-line buildings.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19730-peckham-rye-common-and-homestall-farm-landscape-1861/#findComment-477488 Share on other sites
