I like my Kindle - but don't like being restricted to the Amazon website / bookshop. I haven't been able to sort out how to download books from elsewhere - either directly to the KIndle or via my PC and then transferred to Kindle.

Can anyone point me at a simple "how to do it" guide?

Cheers

It's Gutenburg and other out of copyright, or paid for books. For example, was intrigued to learn that "Cool Hand Luke" a favourite film is based on a novel. Amazon doesn't publish the novel but other e-book providers do. How can I buy and transfer to my Kindle??

Ah I see Marmora Man.

One thing I have done with documents before is email them to my kindle - I wonder if you downloaded a book to your pc, might you be able to email it to your kindle?

There are details on amazon here

Just create a new email account for her, and a new Amazon account in her name. Use your credit card to pay for whatever, then give her the log in details. She can change it to her own card details later.

It doesn't atter if you pay for things with a card that is in a different name to the Amazon account. We have a sort of joint credit card in my wife's name, and I've used it on my amazon account with no problems.

You don't need to email them to the Kindle - just connect the kindle to your PC via the usb connector - the Kindle will show up as a drive (assuming you run Windows). Drag and drop the books to the "documents" folder and reboot your kindle (you may need to go into Home/Menu/Restart on the Kindle to do this). You need to be sure the files are the correct format and not DRM'd (if you've got them from Gutenberg, should be fine).

There is also a detailed guide on the Amazon site: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200493090#usb

    • Oh dear. Sadly I had a disappointing meal on Saturday night. I should have read Malumbu's review above before I ordered. I thought I'd have a dosa for a change. Our meal arrived very quickly. However the dosa was more like a thick and very soggy pancake. The filling was fine. The sambar (sp?) was fine. The chutneys were not what I was expecting, and had a consistency more like sauces.  That might be my lack of knowledge of South Indian food, but I would have expected the coconut chutney to at least taste a bit like coconut. I left most of the actual dosa. My OH said his aubergine curry was delicious. I don't know whether the problem was that the dosa got soggy due to being wrapped in foil to be delivered, but tbh it didn't look like it had ever been a thin crispy dosa 😥 as I have always had in the past  at South Indian restaurants.
