malumbu
Youngs have sold out. Clear that when the shut the brewery down in Wandsworth 5 years ago the writing was on the wall. The pubs were quickly made-over after this. Such a shame as they had a good (if limited) business model, the pubs were cheap and well frequented. They have now ditched beer to concentrate on their pubs, ie make them even more flatpack by design. Not a lot of interest to you lager boys out there, and the gastropubs of Lordship Lane, but London has lost something dear. Marmora Man
Agree - A pint of Youngs was a rare joy, the beer and their pubs were oases of pleasure in the desert of keg beer in the 70s. The upside is that CAMRA and devotees did reverse the keg revolution, epitomised by Watney's Red Barrel, leading to the creation of many new breweries. Long live Doom Bar and many other fine ales. malumbu
Doom Bar is sweet and yucky and Sharps have just sold out to Coors.Coors in turn closed the Tetleys Brewery down in LeedsWhich in turn is now brewed under license by Marstons, who do similar with Courage beer. Marstons is of course actually Wolverhampton and Dudlay brewray aks Banks's.The Watneys brewery became Budweiser (the bland US rubbish) which is now closing it to brew somewhere in Eastern Europe. It's all rubbish really. Even the 'craft' American beers we are now seeing are actually big brewers. Sue
I never liked Youngs ale, but I'm sorry to see it disappear nevertheless :-S Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19440-no-more-youngs-beer/#findComment-473233 Share on other sites
Parkdrive
Indeed a shame, a pint in the Clock House is nothing like it used to be. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19440-no-more-youngs-beer/#findComment-473423 Share on other sites
Sue
The main thing I didn't like about the Clock House was that it was a Youngs pub!Though some of the stuff they tend not to do on draft was OK. Magpie
Don't be too depressed - there are now more brewers in the UK that at any time in history - the sell out to foreign interests by our big brewers has left the field open to mid-rank brewers and the micros. I would argue that Marstons is a great example of a mid-rank brewery. I agree on Doom bar - its a bit gimmicky, and Coors are the clowns who ran Bass into the ground, and now having realised that real ale is on a revival have decided to buy Sharps. The likes of Fullers, Wells, Sheaphard Neame, Adnams, St Austell are all doing well, as are the micros beneath them. It is sad about Youngs - the clockhouse was rubbish for food, but I always enjoyed the draft beer.
