hertburs
Yet another bike stolen. This time it was my daughter's pale green ladies bike. The model is Richmond and it is nearly new. It has a 17 inch frame. It was locked to the bike racks at Highwood Close and stolen sometime between lunchtime yesterday and 11 am today. Presumably the lock was cut. What a pain! DJKillaQueen
Sorry to hear your bike was stolen. These thieves are scumbags. It might help others to know what kind of lock you were using so that they can know what means the thieves are using and use appropriate other locks to minimise their chances of being the next victim. hertburs
She was using a cable lock with a key. Strong but obviously not strong enough! Next time it will have to be Krptonite or something similar. What a pain! If cycling is really to take off in London then there must be a reasonable assurance that your bike is going to be there when you get back. youngone
We had a bike stolen from inside Ashdown court in Highwood Close, admittedly we didn't lock it, but inside a locked building outside our own front door should be fairly safe. We only hope it wasn't somebody inside the building. TheMontesh111
If you want your bike to be there until you get back is best to have one and not two. DJKillaQueen
No cable lock is strong enough (the cable itself, if you strip one apart, is remarkably thin). They are easily cut through with simple bolt cutters. It's a point that has been reiterated many times on the forum...nothing less than gold standard D locks will do. Thieves look for bikes using inferior locks I'm afraid. Townleygreen
Get a folding bike, store them safe inside, both at home and at work Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19390-another-bike-stolen-highwood-close/#findComment-472506 Share on other sites
alelo
Our 2 brand new bikes were stolen within 3 weeks from the day we've got them 2 years ago. I actually saw a few months ago two black hooded teenagers wondering around a bike rack opposite Mercia Court examining stored bikes with curiousity. The moment I hailed them they were gone laughing. Seems they visit our Highwood Close quite regularly to get anything not locked properly. We tried to speak to our managing agents but they were not keen to suggest any security improvements on site as it would incure extra expence and they would have to seek everybody's consent and those who don't have a bike would rather not bother with this. So the only solution is to buy the most decent lock and set "welcome" traps for these teens :)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19390-another-bike-stolen-highwood-close/#findComment-472999 Share on other sites
julia e
we live in caledonian court at the front of highwood close and 2+ bikes have been stolen from the indoor bike room we have. it's clear that opportunists are coming into the building regularly to check the bikes, as a couple of kids have been seen lurking. how they get in i don't know, though the postman leaves the door open occasionally....sorry to hear about the bike. bummer. apenn
During the day it's easy to get in - they just need to use the maintenance button . . .
