Oh, good grief, yes. The standard thing is a wait to regulate the service around Elephant then a driver change just before Camberwell green. Both with all the doors open so that waiting passengers on the bus get nice and cold. I am not sure if anything can be done but it's really annoying. Happens pretty much every day.
I complained about the slow service one Sunday night. No traffic on the road and we were not held for 'regulating' the bus but every single stop, the driver opened the back doors first and waited till they were closed until opening the front. Doubled the journey time and I was spitting bricks by the time I was home!
The frequency during day time, evenings and weekends is slightly reduced on the 176 and most other bus routes. Part of the bus cuts the London Mayor has implemented to avoid fare rises. Most of these cuts were implemented and now discovered are being published. He stood on a ticket (excuse the pun) of freezing TfL fares and this is one of a number of consequences.

That's interesting, I didn't know that.

I disagree that the 176 bus route has always been a bad service. I have used it several times a week for more than 30 years. if you want a local bus with a poor service try the 37.

Disgraceful to reduce a bus service serving South London in a place where there is no tube

That's a bit disingenuous James, you must know that central government has already slashed the TfL budget and is going to remove its grant in its entirety in less than two years, meaning a shortfall of ?700M per year. Mr Khan can cut services or raise fares, either way seems he's going to be blamed for government cuts.

If he put fares up so as not to have to reduce services, I imagine you would be blaming him for that, wouldn't you?

Would I.. ? Fares don't affect me. I am old enough to have a Freedom Pass after paying for

Public Transport for 60 odd years. But I am aware of how bad the Transport System has become.


If Sadiq Khan wants us all to abandon our cars, then he needs to provide a reliable Public Transport system

at affordable prices. Public transport is not exactly cheap. It's not safe. Its not clean. Its not reliable.


They got rid of conductors years ago and saved a fortune. They stopped Drivers collecting money and forced

people to buy Oyster Cards. So its money up front. ?millions. In a big pot. and its not being spent.

Knowing your previous history, DF, much as I often don't agree with you you're not that kind of person, so I'd respectfully suggest that calling a Muslim politician a saboteur is getting close to the "enemy within" rhetoric of the extreme right. And that's a problem because? Virtually any environmental scientist would tell you that private car use will have to be cut for the sake of both the local and global environment.

10,000 premature deaths in London per year due to the pollution that comes disproportionately from older polluting vehicles. What should we do, just accept people being poisoned to death by vehicles as part of life?

I don't believe Mr.Khan has any influence on local council parking policies, does he? If you feel it's a problem your beef is with Tooley Street, not City Hall.

He's done some very good things with public transport, e.g. the Hopper fare. He offered to take over urban rail and that was all set until the government pulled out of the agreement in a transparent piece of pure spite. What would you like him to do in the face of a ?700M p.a. cut to TfL's grant? You can have the existing level of services or better with vastly increased fares, or you can have affordable fares and face some cuts. Again, it's central government who have imposed this massive cut, not Sadiq, why are you ragging on him about it?

Would you happen to have a scintilla of evidence for that assertion, Foxy?

The 176 is the only bus that goes from forest hill-east Dulwich borders to anywhere near the West End. As someone who works in W1 living nearest to FH station where trains are often out of service at weekends its a nightmare.

I pay over ?1400 a year on an oyster card, and sometimes it takes 90mins to get from home to work.

Its a bloody joke.

not to mention the overcrowding!
