Eh?

If you have money, it's up to you how you spend it, surely.

Basic supply and demand suggests that if a market stall has mis-judged its potential customer base, it will go bust. Clearly many of the NCR stalls have not, as they continue to trade.

Are you saying that, for example, an up-market gallery or designer clothes shop should not exist because they're "just for the few and not for the many"?

Do you want to reduce everything to the level of a pound shop?

What a miserable world that would be!

There's room for everything, surely. If you want an old-style market, East Street is a short distance away, and there are fruit and veg stalls in Peckham, Brixton and Lewisham, also not far.

I'm not complaining about not always being able to afford things in NCR. I've had times in my life when I've had money and times when I've not had so much. Why should people who have money at the moment be forced to shop only at places where people with less can shop?

There's a pancake stall on Hampstead High Street, with a varied and lengthy menu and on weekends there are queues of people waiting to order all day long. If it works there, it could work in East Dulwich. A community veg stall would be good too. I haven't joined the local greens system as I don't think I could use up all the veg in a week, so having another alternative would be handy.

I'd like to add my support to all the stall holders who are out every Saturday. I'm not one for tat shopping, but really enjoy all of the food stalls. From Sparkes & the fish monger who are always helpful & offer advice, to the variety of food to eat on the go.

If Mrs. Onion & I are in ED on a Saturday we almost always end up getting lunch from the market. I quite often don't make it past the Dogfather though. But having eaten at all of them I don't think you can go wrong.

As for the stall holders not having a sense of pride, I suppose that you haven't talked to many of them. All the ones I've talked are very proud of their wares & really happy to see people enjoying their food.

Unfortunately I won't be able to show my support with cash tomorrow as I'm not around.

Found this Chair ?? on North Cross Road

Thought ?15 - ?20.. Then thought No, This is North Cross Road

Probably more like ?30 - ?40. ?50. ???

Then I looked at the price tag..

?120.00

Over Priced Tat.. ???

I rest my case..

I'd like to see a stall(s) available to local/near-enough-to-make-it-worthwhile producers or farmers (particularly those who specialise in a few products) to sell seasonal produce.

Not everyone can produce enough variety to fill a fruit&veg stall without using a wholesaler so why not a stall full of seasonal goodies that proucers/farmers use and share as and when they have stuff to sell.

Parsnips, pumpkins, caulis, late apples in November; leeks, broccoli, rhubarb in February - you get the idea. The local greengrocers would still get custom and we'd get the very best and freshest seasonal f&v.

Borough Mkt used to do something similar in the very early days. One week a stall might be nothing but turnips and cabbages - a few weeks later someone else would be there with a stall full of purple sprouting and kale etc.

hello

think tom in grace and favour started the whip round with fresh flower co ..tom at the stall gathered it together and people were very kind ...it was pie in the sky who was mugged zandra ...best day shed ever had ...ran after boys in the snow ..they had yanked and broken her bag off her shoulder x

People say they want a fruit and veg stall but when that guy setup right next to ED Warehouse just off Lordship Lane he got next to zero business. I went in several times and it was just me and him. (at least he seems to be thriving near Herne Hill station now)

But as well a dedicated fruit and veg shop, I think non-supermarket shoppers like me are decently catered for on LL. SMBS is expensive but has many hard to get items (fresh Jalapenos back in stock btw) but when I lived at Plough end I had Nisha's shop, and down at Goose Green end the Turkish shop has most things covered. (The cypress spuds in particular are fantastic for chips). NOt to mention many other sources, from Franklins farm shop, to the various stalls at the weekend (eg outside Moxons)

Frankling Farm Shop sells all the misshapen vegtables the supermarkets don't want. can't sell.

The ones that the Big Farmers virtually have to Throw away / Give away.

They taste the same. nothing wrong with them, but they charge twice as much as the supermarkets.

It's a Trendy thing. The E.D. Snob Element.

Like. O' I never use the supermarkets, I only by localy produced goods..

Like eerrh Dates, Pineapples, Kiwi Fruit, Mangoes. Italian Salami, French Cheeses, Greek olives..

I'm bored now..

i believe the man who has a pop up in grace and favour also sells lovely rusty chairs on the market on a saturday too

try appley hoare in the pimlico road and i think you'll find this might be a cheap 19th century chair ...try driving back from the south of france with chairs and the price of diesel i imagine might be adding to the end price

personally i find that trainers made in korea selling under a brand name costling just a couple of pounds but selling for about 90 far more offensive

and there is freedom of choice no one makes anyone buy anything .......do they ?

  • 1 month later...
Can anybody confirm whether there is meant to be 30 stalls? because there is no way there are 30 stalls on a Saturday (I count them every weekend) - what's going on? The 'information pack' I have goes on to say that it's open all week =/ now I know that's not true.
