DJKillaQueen
We play in the park itself, not on the common....but a very interesting article...never to be enforced I think ;) as the rules have changed since then. Of course the article says nothing about ladies playing footy :D Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19006-the-law-relating-to-playing-football-on-peckham-rye-common-and-in-peckham-rye-park-1904/#findComment-465316 Share on other sites

edhistory
This is not an "article". It is a "bye-law" enacted under authority derived from the Metropolitan Board Of Works (Various Powers) Act 1882.Playing croquet is also banned on Sundays.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19006-the-law-relating-to-playing-football-on-peckham-rye-common-and-in-peckham-rye-park-1904/#findComment-465378 Share on other sites
DJKillaQueen
Wow very interesting. Not likely to be ever enforced though. I'm guessing croquet was popular in 1882? Alan Medic
Well the goalposts on PR are for Gaelic football and Hurling. So I presume the law does not apply to those sports. James Barber
New byelaws were all agreed a couple of years ago. No constraint on Sunday or other sports of Sunday. PeckhamRose
Oh thank GOD, or not - as the case may be for the church numbers. SteveUK1978
I get very frustrated by the no croquet rules on a Sunday, although I have a confession to make. When the riots were going on last weekend I took the chance to sneak out for a quick game in Dulwich Park while the authorities' attention was elsewhere. Been wracked with guilt ever since some James' post is very re-assuring. Loz
I took the lack of cops opportunity to travel up the short bus lane to turn left into Sainsburys, Steve. I'm in living in fear of a knock on the door at any moment. edhistory
I am so relieved to to be told that the bye-laws in force in 1904 have been updated and that all sports are permitted on all days of the week. The bye-laws in force in 1904 explicitly permitted ice-skating on the lake until dusk on any day of the week unless the park-keeper on duty declared it was too foggy to continue.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/19006-the-law-relating-to-playing-football-on-peckham-rye-common-and-in-peckham-rye-park-1904/#findComment-466409 Share on other sites
ianr
> I am so relieved to to be told that the bye-laws in force in 1904 have been updated and that> all sports are permitted on all days of the week. Not so hasty. Archery, javelin, discus and shot are all prohibited, as is more or less any golf more dynamic than putting or addressing the ball. And "No person shall throw or strike a cricket ball with a bat except in a designated area for playing cricket." It's all here, under Anti-social behaviour.
