Hi I have an interview in Brussels at 38 weeks. I really don't want to miss out on the opportunity and the job wouldn't realistically start for another 6+ months so fits in well with maternity leave etc. I travelled on eurostar at 30+ weeks in my last pregnancy and found it quite uncomfortable but I have no other option. I am worried about going into labour there though and just wondered whether anyone had any experience of giving birth in Belgium. Can I just show up at any hospital/maternite or do I have to book? Any recommendations? Will my EHIC cover me? I doubt my insurance will but they are generally very cagey about rules applicable to pregnancy after 26 weeks...
nikki73 - just wondered if you had thought about what you would if the baby was actually born there in regards to getting home after? Would you be traveling there alone? Have you thought about how you would get yourself and newborn baby back? Could they not interview you by Skype under the circumstances??
Yes I have thought about it and dreading it:it'll be a nightmare! Most of all the administrative hurdle of getting a passport for the baby, and then if I have a cs etc but its an assessment centre and they say they can't do it via video link.my first was 2 weeks late and induced so hoping this one won't come early.going on my own but have friends out there. And in a way we wouldn't be missing out on support:no family here.I know its Crazy but one in a lifetime opportunity which if I succeed would really change my kids education opportunities.obviously won't go if I have any issues like bp etc
Hi Nikki--I would get in touch with the Belgium Childbirth Trust (BCT) which is like the NCT here. The group is formed mostly by expat British and usually English-speaking mums. They are enormously helpful. You can find their contact details and more info on having a baby in brussels here: http://www.expatica.com/be/essentials_moving_to/essentials/having-a-baby-in-belgium-1437_8504.html

    • Thank you. Yes we scanned him last time, he is neutered & chipped. We asked neighbours who were feeding him to keep him in as, owner said she wasn't back till following day. That night whilst he was kept in, Gladys came back. The owner lives on a street who's garden  backs onto my friends garden. We asked neighbour that kept him in for night, to not feed him anymore. The owner said not long after she got him, he went out January, never went back till December! I did say so you don't want the cat, she said yes she does but she can't lock him in. I suggested she leaflet all houses who's back gardens back onto hers, to say to stop feeding him. She didn't do it. So until people stop feeding him, he will be a problem as he obviously doesn't want to go home and all the time she never saw him, there was no posters up looking for him, so it's one of those situations! He is a beautiful fluffy black and white and is enormous. Don't know what the solution would be if owner not bothered. Celia hammond overflowing, even kitten season was early this year. Can't take a owned cat though I'm sure he isn't happy. I'm hoping Gladys and Doris will go back home if he isn't loitering. Yes their owner does spray him with water but has little impact. It is a real problem and a worry that they are too frightened to go home and may travel further away. That is the real worry. Will keep post updated.
    • Hi, I’m looking for a small garden table and 2 chairs used but in good condition, ideally one you’d like to get rid of 😊 Chairs need to be sturdy so that she can sit on these safely!  Thanks in advance for her!
    • Is what true? That the student units part of this development that hasn't yet been built is going to fall vacant because there's such a collapse in the number of students in London that they can't rent the units out, and then the Labour government is going to appropriate them to house them asylum seekers? Is that what you're asking is true?
