Most cyclists are probably as safe as most truckers or car drivers, with a small minority who are reckless. But those reckless minority have a lot less potential to cause injury and damage than the reckless truckers or drivers (see carnage caused on M25 yesterday as an example).

Is it more fun to come up with silly generalisations than it is to use well thought out argument?

And why do we continually see threads on this forum about dangerous cyclists but never about dangerous drivers? Is it because we are so used to seeing dangerous or stupid driving that it doesn't merit comment?

I can think of at least two examples of ridiculous and dangerous driving I encountered yesterday while out in the car...but they are probably too dull and everyday to discuss.

I wear a Helmet...

To friggin right. Other road uses take you serious if you look like you mean business.

I also wear all black full on cycling gear and ride a black bike. Add to that a bright green high viz top and a black and highly reflective courier bag. Flashing red & white LED lights as well.

I look like a cross between a copper & a christmas tree & if you can't see me coming, then god help.

However, earlier this year I was passing a couple of stopped buses, when someone ran out between the gap without looking. I was at full pelt. (I'm solid built & weigh nearly 90KG and I ride quickly)

I saw him briefly but still hit him square, knocking him up into the air and into the oncoming traffic lane. Thankfully the cars were moving slowly and could stop ,he was also fairly lightly built.

When he got up he had obviously hit his face and head against my helmet. He was dazed for sure but I reckon it saved us both, spreading the load of the impact. If my unprotected head had hit his, at that speed, I think it might have done us both.

So a helmet I reckon, does more than protect only me.

I also look pretty damn georgeous in it too, with my dark locks flowing in the wind. ( really, I do ;-))

Anyway, I read that councillors twitter page. What a twit he is.

NETTE:))

Cyclists are murderous. But only at night. There's a conspiracy. It's all organized. They come at you from all directions of the compass, congregating on likely victims identified with night-vision goggles and an attack coordinated by text messages ends in some poor random pedestrian being run over multiple times often with spiked bicycle wheels. Not a pretty sight.
Just for the record, Dan Garfield's twitter comments were in jest, in an exchange with a friend. That friend is the cyclist that he refers to. Sometimes it helps to look at things in their true context before piliorying an innocent comment.

    • It sounds like both cats have chosen to flee & seek temporary refuge rather than risk another confrontation with this dominant cat. Find out whether or not the cat has an owner & if he is neutered. If the cat is fixed, unchipped & no owner comes forward to claim him, you can contact Celia Hammond, Cats Protection or Stray Cat Club to arrange a TNR. This would remove the current threat & give these cats an opportunity to return home safely if they are close by. Our team carry scanners as part of a voluntary initiative to help reunite missing cats with their owners. We'll be keeping a look out for Gladys & Doris on our daily travels. I hope your friend is reunited with them soon.
    • Have heard them twice this afternoon. Have binoculars at the ready.....are there any other birds that make similar calls? It's a very distinctive sound. Stand by!
    • Do you have any binoculars?  My first ever sighting of swifts was when I was lying in the park, trying out some 10x25s.  Nothing at all  within plain sight, but when I was playing around with the focus -- presumably for clouds or planes -- suddenly there they were.   I've still never heard any in real life though.  The sample I heard on the BBC website sounded fairly high frequency and not very loud, so I suppose I might miss some; but then there have been precious few reports I've seen here of any being heard.  The only one I remember is Jenny1's last year.
