Peckhamgatecrasher
Do any of you actually use the current library? If you did, you would know it is staffed by some lovely people who mostly are quite charming (the one glum one - you know who you are); it is patronised by a mix of people but at the times I attend, it is usually school children doing homework/research; it does not have a huge stock but the staff will happily obtain books from another library, or for a small fee, will order them; they will recommend books and all in all I think it is quite satisfactory. I fear that what happened at Peckham (a perfectly adequate portacabin with lovely staff moved into a fancy building with no character and aresholes who weren't previously bothered by a book coming out of the woodwork) will happen here too.[sorry - I had a Louisa moment there] Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1881-east-dulwich-garden-centre-possibly-replaced-with-flats/page/5/#findComment-77212 Share on other sites

Jeremy
By claiming "white middle class commuters" are scared of black people, you are implying they are racist. You are implying that that these "white middle class commuters" believe that black people are of a more dangerous/violent disposition.I just don't think that these sweeping generalisations are either fair or helpful. Nero
Looking forward to the roof garden on the new development. And the pressure that the new owners and the developers will put on the very recalcitrant Southern rail to clean up the awful mess behind the wire fences. MelbourneGr
Snorky You freak.I didn't say I didn't want people coming in and sharing the worthless stuff on LL (all I use is the bank). I just said I want them to have ample parking so that they don't spill onto Melbourne Grove. You obviously have a few issues to get off your chest, and instead of reading what I put, you read what you wanted to see. I don't even know which comment you're talking about. If we have things done your way "How do we keep them out" - then I sadly can't take part as it would mean I (YES ME BEING OF COLOUR) would have to leave ED to meet your cleanup requirements. WTF are you on Snorky? I dont think I did. I did however state that fear is a motivator here - how much that is real or imagined is another issue. lpool
Must agree the picture looks very impressive. I wonder how they will deal with the builder's yard at the back. The delivery lorries start very early and I seem to remember the owners of the garden centre saying that they had no control over the extent to which lorries could access the road (which is private), nor did they have to pay towards the pot-holes they created. It can get very noisy with reverse beeps going all day so hope the flats have good double glazing. Billy
Just flicked through these posts - bit confused as to how flats for key workers (i.e. teachers / police / nurses etc) can stir up so much angst. Surely a good thing. And its going to be wonderful for the community to have a much improved library. Its a shame to lose the garden centre though. EDmummy
May have been mentioned before, I afraid I don't have time to read all the posts, BUT where are all these new happy residents going to park their (multiple) cars? Visiting a friend in Derwent Grove is an absolute nightmare if I take the car (of course, only when it is raining and two children and buggy reluctant to get wet or go out in dark). Parking in and around that area is almost impossible - most residents end up parking their cars up to two streets away from their own home. Residents parking permits will not solve this problem. Many of the houses in the area are multiple occupancy - which means multiple cars. There just is not enough space for more residents and their vehicles. macroban
[Thinking of the Livesey]Does Southwark Council intend to close the (existing) Grove Vale Library ~before~ the putative replacement opens on the site of the East Dulwich Garden Centre? Carol
There are quite a few Checkhov books in Southwark Libraries - I'm at work now and just had a look on the system. And I do hope I'm not the "glum" one. I always thought I was quite friendly. In my 10 month cover at Grove Vale I helped a lot of people with a lot of things...but it IS an easy library to miss, on account of it being as big as a toilet. I think the move over the road will be a very good thing..."if" it happens. Nobody seems to know. Not even the staff...which is me. And thanks, Snorky. I'm back up on the hill at the big fat glam now, but Grove Vale is a lovely, harmonious little library and very child friendly. And it does have a pretty good stock for the size.
