I didn't write a word of a lie H, so don't go accusing me of a wind up. That's your area of expertise. Yesterday I confessed to the dept. gossip who knows the story as she witnessed its unfolding, that I had asked people what should I do (you people). When I said that I was advised to spill the beans so I don't get blamed after I've gone, she left the office. I expect she has been keeping the suspect informed my mobile as they are quite friendly. He was emitting funny vibes towards me once he arrived at work.He may be worried.

And why did you go and do that silly Meds...? You should have gone straight to the top in an un-biased 'here are the facts' kind of way rather than engage with the office gossip. If anything, you may have given him the opportunity to turn the tables on you or find some way of squirming out of it. If the HR department is at all sophisticated i.e. Not run by the mother's horse, he may even complain about you. Mind you if he has anything to hide that won't take much to uncover and trace back to him, probably not in his interest..

Hmmmm, a bit disappointed in you there dude, I had you down as a bit of a smart cookie but I guess your just a grumpy numptie...!

Unless you are at the wind-up? Fess up..

I have all the evidence I need, in his writing. I will report it when I leave. The MD/Owner is very weak. He will probably accept some obscure explanation as he thinks this guy is 'too nice', to quote him.

The office gossip knew about this as soon as I did and the suspect probably soon after. I need to work so to spill the beans then would probably have meant my being asked to leave. Being such a smart cookie, what would you have done in those circumstances?

I think you're getting yourself in trouble here Medic.

You have uncertain evidence that hasn't been presented to an authority, nor has the alleged offender been given a chance to explain the situation. The allegations could cost the alleged offender not only this job, but his entire career. This makes them REALLY heavy duty.

You've assumed that he's a thief, and you're gossipping about it around the office.

Not only that, but you appear to have shared it with someone (the office gossip) who cannot be seen to be trusted, and obviously loves office strife.

I'd be getting increasingly concerned now not that I'm might lose my job, but that the alleged offender might feel he has legal recourse.

You assured me it wasn't a wind up, so I took you at your word. Should I not have done?

I'm only summarising in that post what you have said - I'm not having a go at you, so I'm not sure why you're being defensive.

It doesn't matter what I think, if the summary you've given is acccurate then you've put yourself in hot water.

When you asked us our opinion, you were anonymnous and the alleged offender couldn't be identified or suffer as a result.

The challenge was talking to other people in the office about this who you've already said you don't trust (you said you think she's talking on the mobile remember?).

In legal terms this is now slander unless you can substantiate it.

In the 1st instance Hugue, the OG and I reached the same conclusion at the same time as I made the discovery. I was actually looking for a rational explanation as to why a banking had been recorded differently to what was actually banked and why might the cash that was supposed to have been banked, not have been. She reached the same conclusion as I did. However her fondness for the guy I think supercedes whatever she might think of his actions in this particular case. Look, the 'suspect' himself knows I know. I had to make an adjustment in the accounts which I highlighted to him in an email. If he couldn't read between the lines that the adjustment was made because of missing cash then he is more stupid than I think he is.

My hesitation to 'report' this is down to my not knowing the right thing to do. I have a family to feed as well. A case of see no evil hear no evil may be better than unemployment. If they don't make my role permanent which is now looking less likely as circumstances have changed internally, I will probably tell the MD why he is making a mistake (because I am doing the job other people have neglected and making a big difference) and I may even imply all is not well in terms of accounting practices in his office IMO.

  • 1 year later...

You must report the discrepancy. You are employed by the account dept for goodness sake. What else are you there to do- cook lunch?

The position of the employee is irrelevant - it's a question of doing the right thing.

I am pretty disgusted by anyone who suggests otherwise - this concept of "see no evil" etc is pathetic and leading you into dishonest behaviour.

We still teach our children the difference between right and wrong, don't we?

Would you be angry if you were burgled?

"Do you remember this guy called Declan who used to work for us last year?. Yeah well we all know he was rubbish, but there's this new guy who looks just like him, but is apparently very clever. Let's head hunt him and don't take no for an.answer"

Well I didn't 'report' anything last year. However on my return the Golden Child was showing signs of wealth which weren't there last year. Holiday booked for partner, 2 kids and partners Mum costing over ?4k. Took ?5k in cash to spend and already booked holiday for next year. Plus bought a couple of giant 3d TV's and varous other items which could only be classed as luxury items. In effect spending what would seem to be way beyond his means. However he loved talking about it.

What happened next, happened very quickly.

Well I was going to make a great story out of this karter (with a k) but you're getting to the point far too quickly.

The cast as such is as follows:

The Golden Child (favoured employee of the MD)

Stretch (Office Manager who is not really interested in his job and is very tall)

Sharon (long term employee who loves a good gossip)

Cecil (the MD)

Mama (mother of the Golden Child)

Alan (me)

    • Hi if anyone has one pm me cheers
    • You can always check when they registered on the forum, if you are suspicious. But I recommended Aria, and it certainly wasn't my only post on here, and it was a genuine recommendation. ETA: And he didn't ask me to make it, to the best of my recollection. But even if he had, many local tradespeople ask people to post on here if they are happy with the work that has been done.
    • I am not a patient at this practice, but surely it is more sensible to have an initial  phone discussion, as often the GP wouldn't need to see someone face to face unless they actually needed to physically examine them? This then leaves the available face to face appointments for patients who need them. And if during  the phone call the GP felt you needed examining, then arrangements could be made for a face to face. If you feel your ailment is such that you will definitely need to be physically examined, can you not explain that to the receptionist?
    • Give Labour a chance, they've only been in government for a short time, and they inherited a mess! As regards the notice boards, to the best of my recollection they were originally intended as community notice boards, and certainly not for advertising local businesses (who would decide which businesses  should have the limited space on the boards, anyway?) East Dulwich may have become more gentrified since the boards were first introduced, but that surely doesn't mean they should now be completely  taken over for the benefit of  the "middle classes", to the exclusion of everybody else? As  NewWave says, surely these people have other ways to find out about groups and events of interest to them, which the "non middle classes" may not have access to, and even if they did may not be able to afford them. Several people including myself have complained to councillors about the state of the noticeboards in the past.  I think one of the issues is that they were originally maintained by local volunteers, who may have either moved out of the area or lost interest - or given up in despair when the boards were flypostered and/or vandalised. I completely  agree that the boards should be used for information about not for profit organisations in the area, but if regular maintenance can't be provided and/or they continue to be vandalised, then I think it would be better if they were removed altogether.
