Sally Eva
Watching too much Postman Pat has learned me that "fettle" means fix (in Greendale). Only now used generally in "fine fettle". And that's what we are talking about for your bike. You have to look after your own fettle at this point although I can tell you that starting cycling will improve it. Southwark Cyclists run Dr Bikes under Peckham Arch on the first Thursday of the month 5.30-7.30pm between April and October inclusive. That is held to be approximately the period when you can see the tools in your hands and you don't need thick gloves to hold them. That means the first one of the year is April 5th. Dr Bikes are free bike-mending sessions. That bike which has spent the winter in the shed (or possibly its whole life in a shed) may need a once-over before you join a sponsored ride to Paris. Or even before you ride to work or the cinema. A bike which has cycled all winter could do with a check-up for just that reason. Full details are here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/dr-bike-under-peckham-arch-6/Peckham Arch is at the north end of Rye Lane and a picture is attached. It's due to be pulled down and the site turned into houses but last time I looked it was still there. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safe, fun cycling in London. Everything we do is free and open to everyone. If anyone tells you different step back calmly, smile re-assuringly and edge away.
