Can anyone recommend a good employment lawyer? I need someone to review a compromise agreement as have just been told (this morning) that my role is likely to be made redundant, and as I am coming to the end of my current maternity leave it would be useful to have someone with some maternity/legal expertise.
In a similar situation I used Joanna Wade who was brilliant but, rather unhelpfully, now turns out to have left practice to be a judge! However, you could try her old firm - Leigh Day - and see if anyone else there can help. One of her colleagues acted for a friend of mine who had a particularly horrible departure from a firm while on ML and I seem to recall she got some good advice from them and wasn't billed for unecessary work. Hope that helps.
Your firm should be contributing to the cost of independent legal advice where they offer you a compromise agreement - check with them if this is not already happening. Make sure the cost of all your benefits (healthcare, gym membership etc) are included in the compromise. This is often done up until the point of the end of your employment but sometimes it can be negotiated beyond. Good luck, it can be a horrible time and I hope some good comes out of it for you.
Hi - I was recently in the same position so you have my sympathies. Just wanted to say that you're often entitled to free legal advice through your house insurance. I'd never even noticed this and we don't have a particularly fancy policy but we were covered and they had a helpline you could ring. Might be a good starting point.

    • Hi Sue you can try to restore your Laptop to a previous restore point prior to last Monday if you have recovery switched on  To restore Windows to a previous date, you can use the System Restore feature. This feature returns your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It can help fix recent software issues without affecting your personal files.  Steps to restore Windows to a previous date  Click System Restore Click Next Select a restore point (date just prior to last Monday 3pm )  Click Next again Confirm the restore point and system restoration Click Finish Click Restart Open the System Protection tab
    • The person who started the previous thread I linked to said they were Greek, so I presume would be well aware of cultural nuances. The absolute kindest thing I can think of is that whoever started the shop (and I believe there are several shops) was not aware of the meaning of the name. But surely you would not just pluck a name for a new business out of the air? Surely you would make sure it did not have any possible negative connotations, in any language? Has anybody actually asked the shop about this?  As regards this "vegan hot chocolate", I'm bemused. The chocolate powder itself was surely just cocoa and sugar? It doesn't normally have any animal related products in it, does it? So it must have been the milk which made it "vegan", so probably either oat milk or soya milk? I regularly make hot chocolate with oat milk, and occasionally have it when  out. It has never occurred to me to call it "vegan" (I'm not a vegan), and I've never seen it described as "vegan". When I'm out I just ask for hot chocolate with oat milk. It obviously doesn't taste the same as when made with cow's milk, but I prefer the taste. I don't particularly like drinks made with soya milk, which in any case curdles in certain hot drinks, but  most places give you a choice of milk?
    • Good news! A friend with techie knowledge was able to get into the laptop (not physically) and I've now saved the recent unbacked up data onto an external hard drive (and I won't be making that mistake again). Remarkably, whatever he did caused the  screen to spring back to life, and I can actually now  do things on the laptop. However it is in safe mode, and my  friend said not to take it out of safe mode or turn it off, in case I can't get back into it again. Because I don't know what the problem was in the first place which caused the sudden  total and persistent screen blackout, I am worried that  the same thing may happen again. I phoned Which Tech,  as they will now be able to connect to it remotely as they will be able to see the screen, but they don't have an appointment for a week. I also phoned John Lewis again, but they still rabbited on about a factory reset always being "highly recommended" 🙄 presumably because that's what wherever they send laptops to be repaired always does first. Is there any easy way (without potentially making things worse again) to look  into the laptop  history to identify what happened last Monday around 3pm?!
    • Google Translate seems to suggest that arapina is translateable to "negress" in English, which is a bit different in English to the N-word. But I don't speak Greek so don’t know if that's a good translation or what the cultural nuances are, and shouldn't stick my oar in beyond that.  As an aside, the "choco kiss" (schokoküss) that's a bit like a Tunnock's tea cake used to be called a "negro's kiss" in lots of different European countries. It seems like it's been mostly renamed, which seems sensible... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate-coated_marshmallow_treatsl I can't think offhand of any similar stuff in English but I might just be uninformed.
