Better forums than EDF for a good argument?

I love this one on railway technology. No holds barred in some of the comments. Makes us look like a load of softies (note Foxy, Louise, Sue, Rendel etc). I'm teasing of course.

That's some quality arguing, "How many Class 230's do you think is needed to operate the hourly Bedford to Bletchley service?" These are the questions to which we need answers!

Much as I admit I have too much time on my hands, there are many more five figure posters on here than just Sue!

I think to gain better insight into who is the most active, these figures need to be normalised for length of time since registered....so divide by number of months on the forum for an average monthly rate....

....or perhaps it doesn't matter a toss:)

In it's day gwladrugby.com could keep an argument going for weeks about the most trivial thing (the originals gone now and replaced).

Figures like that are completely meaningless posted out of context.

Perhaps you could also post up the date these people joined the forum.

Also, some people retain the same user name, others change theirs, in some cases quite frequently. So you would have to add all their posts together, under their different names.

But nice try :))

ETA: An average number of posts per year would be a better comparison.

It would also be instructive to break the posts down into what forum sections they were posted in.

And as for better forums than the EDF for a good argument, there's been quite a recent ding-dong on a no-dig allotment group on Facebook, as to whether the use of glyphosate (a systemic weedkiller) to clear a plot of couch grass on a one-off basis prior to planting is compatible with the no-dig philosophy :))

Sue, I have had the same name on this forum from day one.

The basic figures suggest that you find more time in your day to respond to others on this forum. As well as open up threads yourself. The figures do not lie.

I personally have had a busy few weeks, and I?ve only managed to squeeze the odd post in here and there between other things.

I wasn't referring to anybody mentioned in the OP, Louisa.

I was making a general point.

What point are you making? Of course I have time in my day. I am retired.

I no longer work very long hours plus commuting across London.

I am actually usually very busy, including booking, promoting and running music gigs and growing flowers and vegetables, and in gaps in between being very busy I post on this forum and also on Facebook. I hope that's OK with you :))

ETA: And if "the figures do not lie", perhaps you could give a yearly (or monthly) breakdown of posts, as suggested by both myself and The Cat above.

Not that it matters anyway. So what if some people post on here more than others? It's a bloody forum, that's what it's here for :)) :)) :))

Personally I'm more interested in the content of what people post than their number of posts.

Helpful posts giving useful information - good.

Items for sale or wanted - good.

Genuine recommendations for tradespeople - good on the whole, probably more good than bad

Opinions based on demonstrable facts - good.

Personal experiences when they are relevant to the thread topic - good mostly

Vindictive personal attacks - bad

Deliberate trolling to get a response - bad

Lying - bad

None of the other forums I post on have any of the last three categories, to the best of my knowledge, however heated the discussions become.

ETA: A considerable number of people who had been regular posters on here for years left because of ridiculous posts on here that it was impossible to respond to because of the totally illogical reasoning.

Sometimes hard to tell whether the illogical reasoning is deliberate but quite subtle trolling, or whether the posters concerned really do think (I use the term loosely) like that 😀

I think this forum is quite tame, overall. If anything, the loss of former regulars, often unfairly blamed on myself and fox amongst others, has dampened down the confrontation. The forum has become quite boring IMO. It seems to me, the forum should have been careful what it wished for. Because here are the consequences, loss of regulars, dumbing down of interesting characters, and a forum which has lost its bite.

I just went to one of my old forums which resurrected again - the C word being used liberally on the mandatory "brexit" thread. Seems to be a rep system now - with no obvious way to give bad rep but someones on -31 - maybe you need so many posts before you can do the nasty.

It?s easy to pass the buck in these situations isn?t it Sue?

I do not recall any of the defunct regulars specifically raising my name on this forum as a reason for no longer posting. If they genuinely felt I was a valid reason for not contributing any longer, perhaps they should have contacted me directly and we could have resolved any issues.

At no stage did I suggest the forum should be about confrontation. But inevitably, people agreeing for the sake of agreeing is just ridiculous. We all have opinions, and we should be able to discuss things as adults without the pack mentality which often develops on here. It?s a cop out to suggest that because you are frustrated with someone?s opinion, you can?t reason with them and therefore you stop using the forum. Bizarre in fact.

And yes, just to remind you Sue, not that it matters, but you did respond to me TWICE earlier in this thread before I responded. Nothing wrong with that of course, but it does suggest you find more time to reply, which goes along with the fox and his original theory.

Personally I enjoy the forum still, no issues for me. I do miss some of the old regulars, but I?m sure they?re still watching and possibly even contributing! So there?s no lamenting the past from me! I?m happy!
