Having a roof over my head.

Having a functioning heating system and enough money to pay for it.

Having a kettle and a toaster, tea and bread.

Having warm bedding.

Having food in the house and not having to worry about not being able to afford food for others.

Not having to go out onto slippery pavements.

Thinking of all those who are not so lucky x

Oh, and apart from the snow, and despite all the hideous things wrong in this country at the moment, grateful that it is unlikely that I will be bombed in my own home, that my grandkids will be shot in their own classroom, or that I will be a person fleeing a desperate situation in their own country who no other country is willing to take in.

I was hoping that perhaps other people might post up what they were grateful for.

I suppose I should have known that wouldn't happen and that the negative posters on here would pounce immediately :(

And yes I do give money to charities for the homeless, Dulwich Fox, and have raised a lot of money for refugees via a benefit gig, so if you are implying that thinking of people is not enough, I put my money where my mouth is.

Edited to add Dulwich Fox's post.

Sue.. So you do Charitable things and you are telling us all about it.

When I did something similar, I was branded about being Narcissistic and it being all about me.

IE when I mentioned about my own fund raising for The RNLI and RNIB. and Diabetes UK.

I too am grateful for my own situation which is similar to yours.

Got very little food in the house though so I will HAVE to venture out.

Oh FFS.

I give up.

I am "telling you all about it" because of your rather nasty post in response to my OP.

Please look up the definition of narcissism.

ETA: And the traits and signs of a narcissist. Wikipedia may provide a starting point for your research.

You really are a prick.

I agree with the sentiments of the OP. Lots of elderly people alone in cold conditions afraid to put the heating on. Many on the streets in freezing conditions, relying on the generosity of others. Unless you?ve been in a dark place both financially and mentally, it?s hard to appreciate the things many of us take for granted. I am truly grateful for my situation of being able to put the gas on and keep warm without worrying about the cost (within reason).

I do take exception at the pack mentality against the fox on here though, as per. He does a lot of things for the local community and is vilified and made out to be narcissistic by the usual suspects. Others, who take a similar approach are treated with respect and admiration. The ?look at me? mentality and attention seeking rears it?s ugly head once more.

Louisa.

Is this a light-hearted thread? If so it's been nice to light a fire, not bother about going out, work from home, go sledging at the Horniman

If it is a serious thread. Struth, this is not extreme weather. We are truly rubbish in the SE. It was worse over winters 08 - 10 etc etc. It will be gone by Saturday. Never missed one day of school through snow and only one day of work when Britain was properly frozen in 1981/2

If it is a nasty thread, to quote John Simm, in Collateral, we really are turning into a nasty little country

I read Sue's Original Post and thought how condescending it sounded.

Apart from those on the street, there may well be people here on EDF struggling and not able to turn up the heating.

In fact there have been on many occasions people in need of simple thing like a Kettle or a Toaster.

Sue. Enjoy your Tea and Toast. Quince Jam. ??

Very insensitive post.

I actually thought this was one of DF?s funnier posts.

It?s got that whip crack sarcasm about it.

What, yours? Yes, very much so.

If Louisa feels there?s some kind of anti-Foxy mentality on here, it may be because you insist on holding yourself up as the absolute barometer of morality and decency. Louisa at least has the ability to admit when she feels she was wrong.

Yes, thank you.

That was exactly why I posted it.

I was making a cup of tea and looking at all the snow out of the window.

I thought how extremely lucky I was compared to many people in the world, and how I should focus on that more often instead of dwelling on things which get me down but in the great scheme of things are really not important at all.

I genuinely can't understand how anybody could have taken it any other way.

You didn't even bother to read the post properly, did you?

Having a roof over my head is just one of the things I am grateful for.

The things were separate. Read it again.

ETA: The heating part was because somebody was posting on the Nunhead Facebook page yesterday that her boiler had broken and she had three children under four, including two under two.

All the council could do was say somebody would call but they couldn't say what time, so she couldn't even take the children somewhere warmer because she had to stay in for the boiler person. I really felt for her.

A load of local people independently posted on the page offering to take round electric fires etc to her.

That is what community spirit is, Dulwich Fox.

I'm often conscious of what I'm grateful for, whatever at the time that may be. I saw the OP and said to myself here, here.

I read somewhere that doing a 'gratitude meditation' can help improve mood in a short time frame. Anything's worth a go!

    • Just in case you do get a cheque you can pay it into your Monzo account or similar by taking a photo of the cheque in the app v easily.  I know my bank's app didn't work but that's probably the exception.  I have to say that if and when people gift me money in any form I'm always really appreciative and never get irritated.  But for those that are not tech savvy of whatever age, brain power or other reason, a face to face encounter may be preferable but becoming increasingly impossible so that company profits can be increased.
    • I'm in my early 40s and I am not sure anyone (aprt from HMRC) has sent me money in cheque form for at least 20 years.  I would be slightly irritated to get a cheque as I would have to find time to pay it in.  I can well imagine a young adult being pretty baffled by a cheque.  Many don't even bank with places that have physical branches.
