Katy Tonbridge
Does anyone else think of Denmark Hill station as being 'honorary East Dulwich' on the basis that many of us commute from there? Anyway, the scaffolding over the platforms is part of the project to provide lifts, and the station will end up looking like this. Good news for those of us with buggies. edcam
Good news for all I think. As with E.D. station, there are terrible problems with the flow of people at busy times. drew
ED station is terrible compared to other local stations. DH is good - a coffee shop as well as a bar outside ... while HH has a number of food retail outlets at the station, good shelter as well as toilets on the platform! Applespider
But we'll lose that fun game that they like to play on commuters at Denmark Hill when they change the platform from 1 to 3 and only announce it as the train starts to pull into the platform so that there's a scrum trying to get up one set of stairs and down the other rather rapidly. They're particularly good at pulling that stunt just after another train has arrived on 2 so that those trying to run from 1 to 3 get caught up in those trying to leave from 2 and 3. PeckhamRose
The important issue is that people who can't do stairs will be able to now get to King College Hospital. Hoorah! Loz
How come DH are getting the nice new stairs and everything and down at poor old ED we got a lean-to? Browncoffee
Wish they'd do the same for Honor Oak Park Station. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18386-revamp-to-denmark-hill-station/#findComment-454304 Share on other sites
Frankito
And don't get me started on Peckham Rye St. Every time I go in they are painting it a different, sickly colour. Polish that turd...! StraferJack
I think PeckhamRose got to the nub of it - Kings College Hospital access. Which makes perfect sense Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18386-revamp-to-denmark-hill-station/#findComment-454375 Share on other sites
Jeremy
I think ED station is just fine (as long as the trains are running). And it's a lot cleaner and tidier than it was a few years ago. david_carnell
Whilst I applaud the attempt to make the the station more user friendly, that bridge doesn't look very in keeping with the architecture of Denmark Hill station. It's all glass and metal when the station is attractive brick.I appreciate the costs involved but this is the sort of attitude that led to Peckham Rye station becoming the abomination it is now. tarafitness
Fabulous and very welcome news!I use DM every day and have been concerned by the broken wooden stairs... was such a pain in the rear when I was on crutches following ankle surgery earlier this year.quite a drastic change mind - very dramatic! AlexC
I'm hoping they also widen the main door to the station! It's just about wide enough to get two people through - same with the entrance to the bridge. Always a bit of a squeeze when it's busy with people coming in either directions! Louisa
It makes perfect sense for DH station to be improved for access to one of the busiest hospitals in London. I'm pretty sure access to all the major hospitals north of the river from local train and underground stations would never have taken this long to sort out. Maybe a small M&S simply food will open up there too hehe ;-)Louisa. Gimme
Indeed! If they provide 'better access' but keep the doors the same then it won't make that much difference to the flow of passengers in and out of the station. Hopefully common sense will prevail.Maybe the new long walkways will give ticket inspectors somewhere a little more sensible to stand rather than bringing the station to gridlock when they decide to do a ticket swoop.AlexC Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> I'm hoping they also widen the main door to the> station! stkilda
I am very dismayed by the extremely ugly and unessential' improvement works to create a step-free route' at Denmark Hill station - which has also resulted in the removal of trees, vegetation etc - not exactly great for the environment. It is a small, historic station, that will be completely ruined by this addition. And I dread to think what the cost of this is to us the taxpayer. Meanwhile they are cutting the South London Line route from Denmark Hill to Victoria/London Bridge - you have to ask where is Network Rail's sense of priority? Jeremy
I think the plans look absolutely fine.Yes, it's a modern concrete/glass structure, but I think it would be irresponsible to spend extra money on some sort twee mock-Victorian creation. Surely providing access to those who wouldn't otherwise be able to use the station should be a priority. StraferJack
Isn't Vanessa still on BBC London at this hour? Surely the appropriate forum for stock phrases like thatAs a taxpayer myself I'm happy to see the money spent on improving access to the station. So that's two taxpayers cancelling each other out Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18386-revamp-to-denmark-hill-station/#findComment-456053 Share on other sites
