clare
If you are looking for primary schools then there is St Anthonys on Barry Road and St Francesca Cabriani on Forest Hill Road. You have to be baptized, your kids have to be baptized, of course you have to be married and a regular church attender for the schools to even consider you......my advice.......don't bother and don't be a hypocrite and pretend to go to church .that is sad, deceitful and a little pathetic. dulwichmum
Dear Ms BonnieParker,Fr O'Connor at St Thomas Moore Church runs the whole show with regard to admission to Catholic School around here. He expects one parent at least to be at mass three Sundays out of four, for at least two years before the date you apply for a school place at St Anthonys (an outstanding local school). Fr O'Connor is a sweet man, but insists the child has been Christened Catholic (there is no salvation in other churches as far as he is concerned) and he makes our current pope look like a bit of a softie. spadetownboy
being a child of the pope myself i cant see what the prob is with catholic schools accepting only catholic children and from parent(s)who are practicing catholics.at the end of the day thats the faith the child is being brought up in and therefore the school with have teaching esp religious ed directed specifically for kids of that faith.as for non catholics attending again i dont have any prob with that as long as all catholic kids who need to attend are allocated a place.its also important for the parents of non catholic kids who attend schools like these to realise that the teaching of the catholic faith will still be directed at them and they will be expected to take part in the full cirriculum with the exception of making first communion and confirmation.worth considering incase they think little johnny is being brainwashed or something. Nero
Don't see a problem? I do. Why should my taxes go to funding the continuation of Cahotlicism, or Judaism or Hinduism or Anglicanism? America has got it right, as has France. If religion is so important, then teach it at home. Don't rely on others of the same, different, or no faith to support you. Same with languages. If your Spanish or Urdu or Welsh is so important to you and your offspring, then you'll be prepared to go the extra mile to teach it to your children. Why do you think it is acceptable for others to support your beliefs. Just think about it. It is so presumptuous. I am not anti-religion, just anti-religion in schools. I speak as a child who went to a C of E school and studied religion to O level entirely of my own choice. dave & ailing
Why would you want to send your child to a catholic school if you're not Catholic?? If you want to pretend to be a churchgoer to get your kid into a better school, pretend to be C of E - it's easier Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/183-catholic-schools/#findComment-2824 Share on other sites
northerner
What I think is a "little pathetic" is that faith groups have a hand in education at all in this country. Having said that, if you have a child at school age, and your chosen school is a church school, then the church or it's followers should have no problem with you as a pretender coming into their church for a year to get your kids into school. In fact they should be grateful you're coming at all and see it as a marketing opportunity. If churches had no say in admission policies of certain schools, do you really think that church attendance would be anywhere near what it is at the moment in East Dulwich? Go along and check out all the parents with toddlers in the congregation trying to ingratiate themselves with the vicar.Sad? Yes; it's an awful situation. Deceitful? I have no problem deceiving a system that's rotten. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/183-catholic-schools/#findComment-2826 Share on other sites
spadetownboy
its not a case of being a pretender for a year to get a kid into a school, you also need the necessary paperwork.no baptismal cert you wont cross the door and like everything else if you want one of those you need to put the time in.as for people attending church on sundays has it ever crossed your small mind that maybe they do have a bit of faith in their bones and attend church/mass to proclaim that faith and not because of some other ulterior motive.next time im in st thomas mores i,ll say an extra hail mary for the repentance of your black soul. all_star
Religious schools foster intolerance, bigotry and divide communities. Spadetownboy why not allow your child to make up his/her own mind about their faith instead of forcing your own beliefs on them? 2+2=4 no matter what the religion of the teacher... Guest
If we all let our children make up their own minds, do you really think they will always make the correct choices? I am all for parents guiding their children in all matters that they feel, as guardians, they ought to. Do you think Muslim, Hindu and Buddist parents for example, just let their children make up their own minds about their religion? I somehow don't think so. Therefore I can't see why Catholic or other Christian parents can't do the same. If their kids get to a stage later in life where they question their own beliefs, then so be it.I can't speak for everyone, but I grew up as a Catholic Christian, went to a Christian school, and was guided by my family in a Christian manner, yet I honestly do not believe I am bigotted, intolerent or divisive. Religion can be all of those, when people become zealous and extremist, but there are many other religions and groups and organisations that become exactly the same when extremism rears its ugly head. One could also say then, that we shouldn't discipline our children, or try to teach them that calling another kid a chav, a paki, a spaz, or whatever, is wrong, as they should be able to make up their own minds whether that is correct or not. mockney piers
I believe the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is thinking of opening a school in Dulwich, attracted by such wonderful shows of piety and of course the low number of pirates in the area.I for one am signing up my unborn children for pasta-based indoctrination as we speak. all_star
Ok then Michael, a practical example. A catholic school will teach children that contraception is wrong, at the expense of educating them about STDs and teenage pregnancy. An christian school will teach children that there is no such thing as evolution. A muslim school willl use religous textbooks that refer to non-muslims as "infidels" who are going to hell. If you stripped out all the religious dogma, what you mean is that you were brought up in an environment which prommoted values such as trust, truth, honesty and equity. All our children deserve the best possible education, and not one which relies on the religous beliefs of their parents. I can understand the vitriol that spews from your mouth, as it has on every other post you have made on this website. It seems like you have nothing nice to say about anyone or anything, including the Catholic Church, so I am sure if there are any Christians reading your post, they won't take your soapbox histrionics too seriously. snorky
Lets organise a Mass Catholic Baptism comrades - all welcome - children and adults - its only a piece of paper after akll and may help bring down this corropt and twisted empire - its not like you have to abide by the guff that they come out with.anyway - taxpayers fund these schools hugely - the Catholic Schools authority defends this funding by saying that catholics are taxpayers too and to allow non catholics in may stop catholics getting access to a decent education.Forward comrades - lets breach the walls of faith schools and liberate their inmates Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/183-catholic-schools/#findComment-2925 Share on other sites
