Gardens GP cutting off HRT prescription - anyone else?

Had the horrendous experience of requesting routine HRT prescription from Gardens GP practice, but when going to collect, being told it has "been refused because you need a medicines review". Then told no appointments available for 2 weeks. Effect - forced into sudden, awful second menopause.

Has anyone else had this experience please? It is beyond belief that can do this. HRT is not supposed to be cut off suddenly. I have looked up medicines reviews and they are supposed to aimed at people over 75 who have four or more medications.

Neither of which criteria apply to me, only one regular med in addition to HRT.

How can they possibly justify cutting off an HRT prescription like this? They actually did it once before, last year, that appeared to be a mistake, and I have seen two different GPs at the practice since, neither of whom said anything at all to me about any need to have a " medicines review " which surely for God's sake, in the case that one were needed, should be a planned activity which is notified in advance and notified with warning, rather than waiting until a patient asks for a repeat prescription - i.e. when they have run out of the med - and then only telling them when they turn up to collect the prescription that it has been "refused". Absolutely awful way to behave towards patients. If anyone taking HRT has been treated like this by the Gardens GP practice, please could you private message me? All info in total confidence. Thanks

I am uncomfortable

with your coming onto a public forum to discuss such a personal medical matter, calling into question the integrity efficiency and standards of care at The Gardens Surgery.

This situation can be resolved by telephone with the practice secretary (Martha) in private.

You will possibly bleed and feel uncomfortable but will not go hurtling into

menopause, there is always a residual effect.

Why did you not have spare pills/patches

Why did you wait until you had finished the course before requesting new supplies/repeat

Do you understand the links between HRT and estrogen receptive breast cancer

There are no question marks as these are rhetorical questions.

This is your one and only post - why are you not mature enough to resolve your own medical shortfall without histrionics and attempting to involve and possibly compromise other patients of the Gardens.

I'm nowhere near 75 but I have regular medicine reviews at my surgery. When I collect a repeat prescription it is always made clear when a review is coming round. I assumed that this was fairly standard procedure for all GP practices. As the previous poster said, I'm surprised you left yourself with such a small supply of tablets before requesting a repeat prescription.

I would also urge any woman to think carefully about the link between HRT and breast cancer. Although I didn't take HRT before developing breast cancer, the hot flushes and other side effects of the hormone therapy I took for five years after my surgery were far, far worse than natural menopause symptoms! My mother took HRT for 25 years, until she had to stop when she was also diagnosed with breast cancer. As soon as she stopped HRT, the menopause symptoms all came back, and she has now had to cope with the symptoms all over again - all the HRT did for her was to suspend her menopause and contribute to her developing breast cancer.

I can understand how you feel GPeed- I have not had the same issue at the gardens(or any issue at the gardens in fact), but I have had a similar issue elsewhere. I understand exactly how you feel, and think you are within your rights to express those emotions however you see fit. If there was an issue, you should have been told when re-ordering or on GP?s first refusal to prescribe medication until a review. Given you are on regular medication, you should have been offered an emergency appointment or advised of how to get an ?on the day? appointment the next morning.

That sounds horrific! The last time I needed a review my (not HRT) medication the pharmacist actually informed me when I picked up a 2 month supply, so I could factor that in when I was next ordering my repeat.

I'm horrified that you have been left with nothing

Bit harsh.

I'm uncomfortable with your unwarranted personal attack against someone who is clearly distressed by the poor communication/management she has received from her GP. You are being abusive. Please stop.
