Got home from work at around 8.30 pm and found my 3 year old black and white cat Gerry, dead in my front garden.

Blood all over his face and paws.

He was either run over or attacked and someone had just laid him under our rose bush. Whilst it was comforting in some ways to see his body in the garden, I looked to see if anyone had dropped a note through the door explaining what had happened.

He was a very friendly cat and if anyone stroked him, he would follow them, even across the road. If we saw him outside, we would put him over the gate into the back garden or take him in the house.

if anyone knows what happened, please lets us know. We live opposite Christ Church and Gerry was well known to all our neighbours as he was a bit of a character.

It was not very nice having to tell the grandchildren that they would not see Gerry tomorrow when they visit.

Gerry loved children and a child might have petted him, and encouraged him to follow them. Whoever found Gerry must have known he was our cat to put him in the garden.

Pugwash, I am so so sorry to hear about your little cat Gerry. I know, like many others, what its like to lose a little pet, and its just terrible. Especially to find him the way you did, not knowing what happened. As you say, at least he was put safely in your garden, so hopefully whoever it was will come forward and let you know what happened. They may not have wanted to leave a note for you and wanted to tell you in person.

Again, I am really sorry about Gerry and I hope you are okay x

Very sorry to hear about your cat. It is perhaps possible that he crept under the bush on his own after being injured and died later. Injured animals instinctively try to hide in a dark, quiet place. I've lost one cat in a similar manner and assumed it was a car accident but never found out.
Sorry to hear about your cat. Is it possible that he made his way home after being injured? We had two cats that did this - both were in traffic accidents and both came back home before dying. No comfort to you, but this is quite common behaviour for cats.
Such a shame. Binary-star is right tho, they quite often get an adrenilin rush and run back to familiar territory before collapsing. It's happened to me a couple of times. I think you're better off believing thats what happened rather than the awful alternative, it will be more of a comfort to you.x

many thanks for your notes - I will take comfort to know that he probably made his way back home. We took him down to the vets yesterday so that he could be cremated.

He had a habit of sitting on top of the fridge and whenever you opened the door, tried hanging upside down to swipe food as you took it out.

As the only male cat in our 4 cat household, he loved to sleep on hubby, which funnily enough as did our last male cat Roger who died about 2 years ago from natural causes.

I one saw a cat being run over, his spine crushed... but somehow, he managed to retreat quickly to a nearby bush to die. I went close to the bush and in no incertant ways told me to b**ger off. It seems cats and other animals like to die away from preying eyes.

Sorry for your loss

    • Mick said he can help move the fence too! Thanks for that idea Malumbu.
    • My neighbours cat has, been missing since easter Friday, from oxenford street. The back garden backs onto rear gardens of oglander road. She didn't know the cat got out till Friday night. She has never been out before and is a very nervous 2 year old little cat. She has only had her 2 months, sadly not neutered or chipped which will be dealt with if she gets her back. One of my other neighbours told me a, fox and cat was, having a fight Friday night, which is really concerning as I have not seen cat but from photos she looks very slim and delicate so I'm hoping she isn't injured or worse. Please keep a look out for her. I've attached the only 2 photos she has of her, cats name is pixie. Thank you.
    • Good idea. Good to see they’re using vintage 1970s Pyrex plates in the Autumn Glory design 🌼
