PeckhamRose
Hi allI did not make it to the Peckham Rye and Nunhead Community Council last week. However, I did discover that there was to be a discussion on plans to install right hand filter lights at both traffic light junctions, from where you turn right (coming from the Goose Green end) to go up Peckham Rye SE22 (towards Clock House) and also at the next junction where you turn right to go towards Brockley / and Strakers Road which is the road that leads into the park itself and the cafe. The 484 turns right up that road. I asked for copies of the consultation sheets to be sent to me, within which are comments and a questionnaire for you to fill out and send off. Now, there has been a lot of discussion for years on this site about both junctions and finally the council are considering doing something about it. If you are interested in looking at a brochure of the plans and commenting, please email:[email protected] and ask him to send you the brochures (there are similar ideas for the Copeland-Consort-Heaton gyratory environmental improvements so you could ask for those too if interested). His direct number is 020 7525 2305The forms for both have to be returned by 11 JULY 2011.The corner of East Dulwich Road and Peckham Rye SE22 is still East Dulwich so I hope this won't be moved to the Lounge. My comment in the form shall be along the lines of, that I hope the right turn filter light will not be a separate light; ie. that we will still be allowed to turn right on the onward green light when it is safe to do so.I think this is good news. And I have been persistently asking for this since those traffic lights went in, years ago! PeckhamRose
Oh - and the Copeland-Consort-Heaton improvements, basically allow that those roads shall now be two-way and not one way, but there will be a lot of traffic 'calming' and (hooray) zebra crossings (and not traffic lights!) PeckhamRose
"That would be the sensible approach".It would, wouldn't it. But this is Southwark Council! I hope you will get some brochures and have your say too, kford! east-of-the-Rye
Here is the plan for the Peckham Rye East Dulwich Road junction. The Consort Road one way system document is too big to attach. It might still be worth getting them sent to you as they might be easier to read.It was originally suggested that the junction have diagonal crossings as well as the existing ones (like at Oxford circus) but this apparently would have added a second or two on to the time the cars have to wait, so will not happen. What I don't like is the way that traffic will continue to speed up Scylla Road, and the new lay-out will almost encourage them to do so. There will be a stop sign for cyclists who are gonig south past the end of Scylla Road which seems to be making things worse for cyclists, not better.. georgegarrett
Is this part of the Nunhead regeneration plan. I notice that they are starting to fit all the new wooden shop fronts and the awnings are arriving soon. I think its great that they have finally secured the funding to re-vamp the whole of that high street, it will really give it that village feel. Are they moving on to ED next ? that would be good its a bit Ivor Heath at the moment, Iceland, Cars for sale on the pavements and a Gambling arcade. North cross road is nice though. jimmah
This plan seems really well thought out I like it. Am I right in thinking though that there is already a cycle bypass going south from the lane? I use one in front of Austin Court. Slightly off topic, the crash outside the Rye Hotel the other week seems to have wiped out the red telephone box, I'm pretty sure this was listed, does anyone know if it will be replaced and how? PeckhamRose
One the voting forms there are various sections you can vote for, for example on the Peckham Rye changes you can vote for raised zebra crossings at various points (or vote against), cycling paths, and the right turn filter lights to take you up both sides of PEckham Rye Park. On the One way system round Copleston / Heaton you can vote for two ways (or not), raised crossing areas (or not). neilson99
Thanks for posting this Peckham Rose, really helpful. I'll email them and get a form - do they actually listen/pay attention though? The last thing we need is more footpath widening, and I hope the cycle by pass they propose is better thought out than the disruptive, expensive and never used it seems efforts further up Forest Hill Road near the school. Great idea on the right hand filter for traffic though...I do wonder how much disruption this will cause though, given the Thames Water debacle and the various other works which seem to be part of the commute down to Peckham Rye station, a bit of space for a short journey wouldn't go amiss! PeckhamRose
I agree about wondering about how much notice councils / governments take of people when we vote for certain things. But they're committed to getting our opinion; maybe not committed to acting on it.Thanks for your thanks though neilson99! east-of-the-Rye
Jimmah, the cycle bypass that you use will remain, but you will have to stop at the end of it and give way to cars already on Peckham Rye. I think that the kerb of the nearest side of Scylla Road should be built out quite a lot to make cars slow down before they turn into it - or even put them off doing so, the majority are just trying to avoid the lights a bit further on. Then it would not be necessary to make cycles stop. jimmah
Thanks for explaining east of the Rye, you are right about the junction. I think an extra roadsign would just add to street clutter and its doubtful whether it would make a difference to cycling habits (good and bad). I wonder if parking restrictions on the eastern side of the park might add to speed problems, currently people are forced to moderate their speed simply because of the chicanes made by parked cars. If the road was clearer surely people will incline to drive faster. PeckhamRose
In the mid eighties there were no bollards down Peckham Rye East side. No zebra crossing either. But neither was there a traffic lights at the junction with East Dulwich Road. Also also one was able to get from Nunhead to Somerton/Waveney without having to use that busy crossroads, so traffic moved more easily to get where we needed to go. Then the side roads were closed off to traffic so everyone had to get to that junction. It became busier so traffic lights were put in. We begged them at that time to put a right filter light in, but after years and years they are finally asking us if we'd like that right filter light put in. They didn't ask us about all the other stuff done in the past!I do hope lots of you will vote on these forms. fredricketts
Quite agree with you, it?s the Council and TFL that cause most of the traffic jams today, and going on experience, the Council, only do, what they want. Consultations, just a waste of public money, but, we must keep trying to get through to some of these, pig headed Councils. Will be getting the forms and voteing. Thanks to you. DJKillaQueen
The current plans for the junctions mentioned were drawn up after initial consultation with road users and the local community. So they HAVE listened this time to what the main concerns are, looked at supporting data and taken on board some of the suggestions, for example filter lights.
