Hi All,

Would have loved to meet you guys today but for the fact that I'm discovering the joys of having a really bad cold while pregnant. Ah, for decongestants... But I will definitely be coming to the Gowlett on the 3rd, ready to devour a pizza.

Welcome Kate! I just moved here from Canada about a year ago and am due on the 13th of February. Perhaps we can compare notes as we figure the British system out!

I have a question for the group: how many of you are considering making an epidural part of your birth plan? Has anyone come across some good website or books that present the pros and cons etc about this? Any thoughts, second time or third time mums?

Hope no one else gets this nasty cold!!!

Julia

Havd added mooncake to the list of seminar peeps. That makes 7 of us. Will get in touch with the consultant and see what she says about availability. Mikandnik, how easy would it be for you to get out of your arrangement on 10th???

Hi all,

Sara I hope jab went ok?

Julia. I think birth plans serve as a good prompt for discussion with your partner but depending on birth experience become redundant in delivery room.

Key things on mine which I insisted on were:

Happy for baby to receive Vit K jab.

No cleaning of baby after deliver and for her to be placed skin on skin immediately after delivery

Intermittent monitoring of baby's heart rate- not continuous if at all possible

No cutting of umbilical cord- natural third stage.

Self attachment for feeding if possible.

And then emergency situations and this always makes me weepy... Partner to accompany baby if transferred to SCBU

Remaining conscious during C-section

With regards to pain relief and intervention I put order of preference and obviously planned for as natural as possible but ended up having 3 epidurals none of which were that effective for me..

You really can't be that rigid with your birth plan as you can't predict how you'll cope with labour... I'm hoping for a natural this time but you never know what size... Length of time... etc labour will be like.

I would think that the pethadine/epidural debate is the one you should think about but both as administered at different stages of labour and pethadine doesn't seem that common at Kings...

Eekkk... I just hope we all sneeze our babies out!!

yep - flu jab was v quick as arrived a few mins early, but of course I forgot about the whole aqua aerobics thing tonight so let's see how that goes! incidentally, it's the last one i can make due to antenatal classes starting next week - wonder if I should try pilates instead?? Where are you doing your classes?

Also, I keep forgetting to ask you about cloth slings! I will buy some fabric soon...

Julia - did you mean you want to write into your birth plan that you do want an epidural or don't? I think generally if you want one in labour you can have one - and usually you'd be advised against saying in your plan that you definitely do not want an epidural under any circumstances!

Sara,

My jab is friday so hoping not to get fluey reaction in time for weekend!

'Normal' pilates is monday night at 6:15 and if your fitness levels are good Pilates inspired toning is Wed pm at 6:30 both at dulwich fusion. Jennifer the instructor is amazing with a body to die for, so great motivation!

I always have to book a week before as very popular although you can phone and ask to go on waiting list as often last minute cancellations mean you squeeze in!

Although, if you 'work from home' regularly she does day time classes which are quieter... Oh saying that in a couple of weeks she's taking a 5 week holiday. I'll still go to those slots but the cover instructors can be hit and miss!!

I'll try to remember to bring my sling next thurs.. If I'm feeling brave and unashamed I'll bring a teddy for a demo!!

Anna

Thanks for the info missmack,

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the SCBU? Still a newbie on this one!

mothercourage, I can get out of my thing on the 10th if need be, just let me know if that is the date the consultant can do.

All those who met at the electrical cafe today, hope you had a lovely time. My services weren't required to drive to the hospital with my girlfriend as the labour ward was full so she had the baby at home mid-afternoon - MUm and but all well.

Hello everyone

for sleep consultant: 18th/19th are def not good for me as I am away that week end, but then I am planning on being away almost every week end till beg of Dec - making most of time before the new one comes along.

Evenings are ok with me. I am starting to reduce my hours with work, so best evenign is Thu. Mon I finish too late but Tue and Wed I might manage a bit later 8.30/9 pm.

However, I am not desperate, more curious about the sleep consultant so please don't try to re-arrange just for me.

I am quite keen to meet up so if I understand correctly next evening out is Thur 3rd...

Congratulations to all new pregnant ladies joining and the lucky ones who have started maternity leave. No such thing for the self-employed!

Speak soon.

Sleep consultant provisionally booked for 10th nov. That seemed to be the only feasible date that everyone could make. I do hope that's ok with you Nic - I realise it means you have to reschedule your arrangement that night. Apologies. Hopefully it'll be worth it though...

A very cheeky post here so apologies in advance; I've had an antenatal course cancelled at short notice (not enough interest - it sometimes happens) so I'm trialling a one day 'labour & birth' class. I've put a post in the classifieds, but I thought that if there were any of you winter Mums who hadn't yet had your babies, & missed out on booking NCT classes or other private classes this might be a good opportunity to 'fill in the gaps' so to speak.

I'll only be doing labour & birth topics as it's just for one day, but because it's a bit ad hoc & spaces are limited I can tailor it to whatever information you want depending on your personal circumstances.

Apologies for highjacking your thread, and to those of you who've already had your babies & this post isn't relevant. I just thought I'd see if there was any interest for such a session.

If you think this might be for you please check out my post in the family room classifieds http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?25,778773 and PM me.

Thanks

SW

Hope everyone and their bumps are doing well.

Just remembered that Lucky 7s is on at the Gowlett on Thursdays - so perhaps we should stick to the Actress that night? Unless anyone wants the chance to play DJ - We could kick off with Johnny Mathis - When a Child is Born. See how quickly we could clear the pub ....

Hi all,

I'll be going to the gowlett on thurs anyway as friend is having drinks there for birthday... Would obviously like to see bumps too so let me know plan and I will pop over to see you for one if you decide on actress or 'Kill two birds' at the gowlett.

Jab done- aching arm a bit now but otherwise fine.

Hopefully see you on thurs x

Just to say that I've pm'd the people who've expressed an interest in the sleep seminar. If you are keen to attend but haven't received a message from me then please get in touch as it means I've ballsed up in some way. There's still space for one more by the way...(Nov 10th, 7.30pm, ?20 per person).

Blimey you lot are chatty! I just popped on to see if we are still meeting on thursday this week and if so where! I will pop back and see what is decided. Sorry I missed last wednesday coffee, that would have been lovely too!

Hope to see you on thursday.

rx

Hi all, I have to send my apologies again. I can't make tonight as my mother in law is staying with us and hubby arranged dinner out forgetting my mum to be club.

Will definitely be there Thursday fortnight.

Hope you are all doing well.

    • Avoid companies that are run by non trades people Seems to be the trend lately. Check them on Companies house first. There are some great family companies or sole traders. LMQ Roofing 07860 467708 lmqroofingservices@outlook.com ANR Roofing 08009330439 Fist on my list is Liam McQueen https://www.lmqroofingservices.com/ Honest, reliable, constant updates, proper written quotes professional and lovely polite workers. Great work. Also though we did not use them in the end ANR Roofing based in Wimbledon offered some sound advice and quote.  Also very lovely family run firm. And Crest Roofing based in EC1V 2NX came and gave a quote and seemed very lovely with some advice also. 07934 975769
    • Had a terrible experience with this company recently. Their rooofers were abusive and really not nice. Simple job to remove an aerial which we knew would mostly cost in scaffold turned into a nightmare, They dug up old rotten boards in our front garden (there for beetles) and use under the scaffold. When we questioned the positioning of the scaffold (we needed it down the side and not on top of plants and garden) I received a torrent of offensive teenage sexist shouting. The main guy doing this was called Jimmy. They did eventually remove the aerial (no tools to do so I had to supply) They told us the side of the hip needed new timbers and re-roofing. We'd recently had it inspected and it looked good (I'm a carpenter by trade and went and looked at rafters inside - no issue. They seemed to take offense at my carpentry knowledge also. They pulled ridge tile off then told us it would be 3200 to repair!! Stood on a non load bearing lead canopy and more.  Left cooked food and rubbish in garden, Just avoid them is my advice. One of an ever increasing number of firms owned not by trades people who subcontract and pay the scaffolders pennies. I'll do recommendations in another post!
    • I live locally and am on Lordship Lane and North Cross Road most days. I've never been forced into traffic, or noticed any problem in any of these places! I appreciate that might be different with a buggy or mobility aid. I like to see people enjoying themselves outside.
