Upholstery courses at Thomas Calton Centre in Peckham starting in January

Recommended Posts

In case there are any people interested in learning upholstery skills in the new year...

Thomas Carlton Centre on Alpha Street in Peckham SE15 (on lots of bus routes from East Dulwich) run courses aimed at beginners and those with previous experience and they are enrolling for the January term now.

I did one of the beginner courses last term and having started the course with no upholstery whatsoever managed to upholster 4 dining chairs (pics attached) over the 10 week term. Fellow students worked on all sorts of other projects including footstools, piano stools, lloyd loom wicker chairs, drop-in dining chairs and armchairs. The teaching is excellent, the studio is well-equipped and, even over 10 weeks, you'll get a chance to learn some traditional and modern upholstery skills (depending on your project/s).

Each 10 week term course is ?100 standard / ?50 concession.

They have a peculiar system at the centre where, each term, a course only runs if it attracts new students so I said I would spread the word!

If you're interested in learning upholstery (or something else) take a look at the prospectus (upholstery is on pg 38) and enrolment info here:

Hi Cuong,

I used the heavy duty staple gun at college for my project.

You could try posting under the wanted section perhaps? Maybe some kind-hearted EDF person can help... Or you might even try contacting some local upholsterers - maybe they'd staple everything up for you in exchange for a small fee.

Sorry I can't be more help.

    • What an unpleasant thread this is.Β  I have no reason to think any of the barbers in the area are in any way dodgy, and I can vouch for Dulwich Barbers (134 Lordship Lane) as being both excellent and frequently busy.

    • I think it is less easy/ more expensive to fence off the Common, as opposed to the nicer parts, which is why our nicer parts are hawked off to Gala. Why should we have access to nicer parts of our park in summer when we might most like to have access if it can be monetised. It's ironic really that this council is so Trumpy.Β
