Rather a silly argument which could be applied to anything which doesn't cause people to die. I would have thought as an obviously keen pubgoer you would appreciate the damage losing such precious community assets to the greed of developers and the pubcos is doing to our society. I wonder if you'd be so phlegmatic if the EDT was closed?

I have never drunk in the Gowlett. I went one evening some time back. 8.00pm ish There was Loud Music

and one person in who appeared to be asleep on the bar. Head in arms. Not really my scene.

The EDT is a very successful pub. The only place left that still looks like a pub.

Its on the main drag. The Gowlett was a run down backstreet pub struggling to compete.

I never venture down that way late at night on my own , especially when its dark.

I'm sorry that it has closed, there were some locals that seem to love the place.

Horses for courses. Its always sad to see old boozers close down, but if they cannot support themselves

what can be done. ??

Foxy

I refrained from replying to the first Foxy post, in any case rendel replied better than I would have.

But the 2nd Foxy post, come on !!

Basically guys if someone makes-up their mind that something is the case, then that's what they're gonna believe.

No rhyme or reason.

No material basis.

Not worth challenging.

Do you ever read over what you have posted, Dulwich Fox?

Dear oh dear.

I do not need to read what I post.. I am very careful what I write.

There USED to be Police Notices on all lamp posts Warning people that Thieves were operating in the Area.

But the Loony Left had them removed saying they were offensive..

If The Gowlett wasn't struggling.. Why DID it close ???

DulwichFox..

P.S. Sue.. If you have anything to say to me.. You can always say it on any of the several occasions recently

when you have turned your head away as we have passed in the street.

You seem to be very quick to get your word in on here.

Are you just embarrassed. ???

I do not want to speak to you in person Dulwich Fox.

You posted completely ridiculous libellous statements about me on here and have never removed them or apologised.

And in any case, why would I respond to a forum post on here by speaking to you in the street? It's an online forum!

And thieves are operating all over London, so do you therefore never go anywhere after dark?

And what reason did the people you refer to as the "loony left", sorry, "Loony Left", give for removing the police notices you refer to? In what way were they "offensive"?

Well it was a back street pub, struggling to compete. I agree with that much.

Not really scruffy, though. And it's not a dodgy area at all.. in terms of crime stats, I doubt that specific part of Peckham is really discernible from East Dulwich.

DF - you need to get out more in your local community. From your posts it appears that you only move around in a tiny bubble in the area i.e. Lordship Lane. Also your comments about other parts of the area seem designed to offend - why bother? You just come across as an angry misanthrope, frightened by any change or challenge to your, some might say, narrow view of the world.

The Gowlett was the only pub I felt comfortable going by myself and hoping to find someone interesting to talk to.

Not very near The Gowlett, but if you don't know it, check out The Ivy House - that's the only pub that I feel comfortable going to by myself.

Admittedly I am biased as I have community shares in it and run gigs there, and there's usually somebody around who I know.

But even if I didn't, it has a very friendly feel, and a very different vibe from pubs in East Dulwich. A real mix of people go there and there are lots of different things going on, from knitting groups to dance lessons to Sunday afternoon jazz.

But I am very much hoping that The Gowlett will re-open.

Is That so ??

I used to regularly drink in pubs in Brockley.. Lee.. Blackheath.. Chislehurst .. Bromley.. Rotherithe.. Greenwich .. Beckenham.. Catford.. Nunhead.. Forest Hill..

I was a dancer and travelled the length and breadth of England Dancing English Folk dance and playing music.

I have travelled to / through most countries in Europe.. Most of the inhabited Greek Islands.. Several destinations

in Southern Turkey.

Over the last 50 years I have gone out virtually every night. I seldom stay in.

I have drunk in 100's of pubs and eat in 100's of restaurants.

You will never in your lifetime catch up with me.

My Bubble is very big. and my view of the World is very wide..

Misanthrope ?? I am an ambassador for mankind.. I will talk with anyone.. Whoever they are.

I just do not suffer fools.

PS Should the Gowlett ever reopen.. I promise I will pay the place a Visit.

    • And just by coincidence I tried to scan the cheques in to my account today but the app wouldn't scan so my bank told me I would have to go to a branch or to the post office as they couldn't work out what the problem was. Hah!
    • No and Wes Streeting is heading in this direction because he knows the NHS is broken and was never built to cope with the demands currently being placed on it. A paid-for approach in some shape or form, and massive reforms, is the only way the NHS can survive - neither of which the left or unions will be pleased about.
    • Labour talks about, and hopefully will do something about, the determinants of poor health.  They're picked up the early Sunak policy on smoking and vapes.  Let's see how far they tackle obesity and inactivity. I'd rather the money was spent on these any other interventions eg mental health, social care and SEN, rather than seeing the NHS as income generating.
    • I think it's connected with the totem pole renovation celebrations They have passed now, but the notice has been there since then (at least that's when I first saw it - I passed it on the 484 and also took a photo!)
