Gumboots / Rainbow after school club

Recommended Posts

Hi

Like many of you I'm starting to check out the after school pick up options for my son who will be starting Reception in September. After school club seems by far the cheapest option but I don't know if it will be ok for him, I don't want him to be the only little one.

If anybody has any experience of either of either the Rainbow or Gumboots after school clubs I'd be very grateful for any info. Is it easy to get a place? What time do you need to pick up by? Will he be left to fend for himself or are there lots of staff on site? How many other children will be there on a typical day?

Many thanks

S

When my daughter first started reception she went to Gumboots After School Club - at the Goodrich School site (there are two sites). She was very happy there although was one of the smaller ones. There weren't many children from reception attending but it didn't seem to bother her too much. The kids were well looked after, plenty of staff, lots to do and she is really looking forward to returning there when my maternity leave ends and I'm back at work.

The children can do lots of arts and crafts, play in the playground outside (supervised) or just general play indoors. I think you have to pick up by 6pm. I'd contact them now if you want to get a place - they seem to be very popular. At least if you have your child's name on the waiting list you can decide whether to take up a place if you're offered one further down the line.

Thanks for your reply Trish. That's reassuring. However we won't be using the Goodrich site so if anybody knows more about the site(s) that St Johns children use that would be great too.

The Rainbow club is the most convenient for us on Ammott Road. Anybody use it?

    • Southwark have decided to no longer supply or support the use of the smaller blue boxes for recycling  https://www.southwark.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/recycling/your-recycling-containers Fot those of you that currently use a blue box, it will be removed and a large blue bin will replace it. A lot of people use the blue boxes to avoid cluttering their gardens or the street so whilst I understand their health and safety reason, it's going to potentially lead to more clutter on bin day or more bins left on streets as there is no room in properties.
    • That would be a reasonable attitude as regards the management, but my experience is that the posties are doing the best they can but are woefully understaffed (there's no cover for sickness or leave, and some walks have no regular postie assigned) and, despite denials, packages are prioritised over letter post. Posties can only physically carry parcels to far fewer addresses than letters, which means even on existing walks they don't take letters out wit them if they are carrying parcels. Because they cannot walk to the DO (in Peckham) they have to drive there and back, with two or 3 walks worth in each van. Making covering another postie's  walk that much more difficult.
