Jeremy
That's so cowardly. 3 kids beating up one elderly man (who probably wouldn't have much cash anyway). Sickening. hpsaucey
My OH was asked for the time by a group of young men on Barry Road I think last Thurs/Fri. He said he sensed trouble! When he looked at his watch and told them the time they asked him what date it was - presumably disappointed because he hadn't produced a phone to tell them what the time was! Obviously a spate of this at the minute. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17269-peckham-rye-park-mugging/#findComment-436243 Share on other sites
sheilarose
Can someone say exactly where in Peckham Rye Park these muggings took place? I walk my dog there almost every day and would like to know which parts to avoid. StraferJack
it's the bit of the park with the chalk outline and a marble stone saying "Muggers please queue here"If you can't see it it could be because the muggers don't play fair and move around a bit Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17269-peckham-rye-park-mugging/#findComment-436343 Share on other sites
belladonna
My son mugged for phone on Brockley footpath, threatened with bottle. Also mugged last year East Dulwich. Friend's son mugged for phone. Another friend's son, threatened with knife at throat and bike stolen in Peckham Rye a couple of weeks ago. Time the police started hanging around the Rye, I guess they call it patrolling. Our children are under threat. Blame the recession, blame consumerism, but where the hell are the community wardens and police? Penguin68
I don't think it's the recession - just 'fashion' - 6-7 years ago and more my daughter's teenage (male) friends in ED were being reportedly mugged for phones etc. on average every 3 months or so. (that is, each one was being mugged that frequently). Allow something for teenage hyperbole, and that's still a lot going on - and it seems to go on whatever the economic climate. It's probbaly not actually getting worse. Put 3+ fee paying schools into this sort of area and you have a god-given group of easy targets, likely to have stuff worth nicking. Gavin Edwards
A local resident just emailed me about these incidents and suggested that I post here. Obviously it is very concerning that this should take place at all, but particularly in daylight hours. I'm sure the police are dealing with the individual incidents already, but I'll be getting in touch with our local Safer Neighbourhood Team right away to see if anything more can be done to ensure there is no repeat. I'll post an update shortly. PeckhamRose
PLEASE NOTE: there is a POLICE WARD PANEL meeting this Thursday at 7pm at the Rye Hill Tenants and Residents Hall on the SE15 side of Peckham Rye Park. Come along and tell the police, SCPOs, Community Wardens, and Councillors if any come, your concerns. Guest
A regular patrol of Peckham Rye would be great. I realise this is trivial compared with a mugging but a couple of weekends ago a man watched his dog pee on me, my bag and the bench we were sitting on and then got abusive when I asked him to keep the dog under control. After a short shouting match he sneeringly told me to report if I was that bothered - presumably knowing there was no one to report it to - and sauntered off. Rather upsetting at the time. Nero
Perhaps the police support officers that often patrol the really-not-so-mean streets of SE22 in broad daylight, often in threes, could spend more time where offences are currently being recorded. Cd you effect this, Gavin? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17269-peckham-rye-park-mugging/#findComment-436436 Share on other sites

Of course muggers do move around, but they may have a preferred spot - perhaps one of the quieter corners of the park. Doesn't of course mean that someone ought to be cautious in one part and careless in another, but it might be useful to know. chichirara
Apart from the fact that the 3 private schools have been around for 200 years! No one deserves to be mugged. Although there were Highway men around then. Lord Byron went out on lookouts for them when he was at Dr Glennies School in Dulwich. Penguin68
I don't condone those who mug children from DC, Alleyn's and JAGS - I comment on the fact that you fish where the shoals are flocking (if you are a fisherman) - and obviously have done so for as long as the fish have been there. The point I was trying to make is that (a) this isn't something unique and recession linked and (b) it probably is no worse than it's been for a long time - this doesn't make it in any way good but it does suggest that we shoudn't be stepping up our alarms an concerns in response to a real increase in incidents.Every so often the police try to suppress this behaviour - and now would be a good time for them to start again - but the learning point is to encourage vigilence and sensible behaviour amongst the potential victims - don't wander about aimlessly with ?100s of pounds of kit dangling about your person, don't wander about drunk and vulnerable (young adults, obviously) don't take unlit and unobserved short-cuts etc. etc. Attacks in broad daylight in high passage areas are relatively unusual, apart from being aware of what's going on around you (and moving around in a bunch) there is little you can do to avoid these. However un-sensible you are, of course nobody deserves to be mugged - but some actions are more likely to make this a possibility than others. I take a Hobbesian view of life (nasty, brutish and short) rather than a Rousseau-ian (noble savages) and act accoordingly. JohnL
These are schoolchildren and we would just tell them to go home if they didn't have weapons.School Bullys ALWAYS have a favoured area to bully - and always go for the easy target.StraferJack Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> it's the bit of the park with the chalk outline> and a marble stone saying "Muggers please queue> here"> > If you can't see it it could be because the> muggers don't play fair and move around a bit Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/17269-peckham-rye-park-mugging/#findComment-436653 Share on other sites
DJKillaQueen
The Peckham Rye SNT have been targetting teenage robbery around the skateboard park for several months with good success. Robbery and other types of crime tend to increase with warmer waether but the audacity of dayight robbery is alarming, although it sounds as though the same group might be responsible for several robberies and attempted robberies. The SNT Ward Panel Meeting on Thursday is the ideal place to raise this and judging by the excellent response of Sergeant Neil Cooke and his team in the past the same can be expected again I'm sure. JohnL
Outside EDT last night saw my first stop and search in East Dulwich (or that's what it looked like).Don't know how it ended but a search of the boys bags looked to be carried out and I think they were confiscated - so maybe a caution. PeckhamRose
PLEASE NOTE that the Police Ward Panel which I know you'll all want to come to, is now at HARRIS GIRLS ACADEMY and NOT at the Tenants and Residents Association Hall. 7pm tomorrow. Gavin Edwards
I've just got a reply from our local police team. They're putting in place a number of measures in response to these muggings, including additional patrols. As mentioned above, the ward panel meeting tomorrow will be a good chance to speak to them and find out more.
