Ok there were a few scrapes that lasted about 2 mins. but they were dealt with.Did not need bouncers back then. Ok its the law, but The Bishop really does need them. The Bishop has deteriorated over the years. The EDT has bouncers but only needs them when Dreggs from the Bishop migrate there.DulwichFox Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/170246-the-bishop/#findComment-1184057 Share on other sites

fishbiscuits
The Forresters wasn't that bad. "Scampi" and chips with a pint of lager for a fiver, wasn't it? Or thereabouts. You didn't have to join in with the fighting if you didn't fancy it. Louisa
The Foresters was one of my favourite boozers. I was a regular during the late 70's. I miss that crowd I could walk in on a Friday night with Mr Louisa and see faces I knew and recognised. Louisa. malumbu
Did Millwall drink in one pub and Palace another, did they meet for a punch up or is just a myth about how rough the area was 30 years ago Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/170246-the-bishop/#findComment-1184093 Share on other sites
uncleglen
I did put 'bad' in quotes Foxy- my stab at sarcasm as the 'refurbishment' of LL is supposed to be good.Talking of stabbings- wasn't there one in the Magdala years back? Abe_froeman
Fox what are these 'Dreggs' you speak of? I only ever see young couples and suits from the nearby estate agents in the bishop? DuncanW
I don't think ED had many Palace fans back then, so I would doubt that.It always used to be a predominately Millwall area, but I guess a lot of those people have moved on. And due to Palace's continued tenure in the Premiership and family reputation, a lot of people who have moved in more recently, have adopted them as their team..malumbu Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Did Millwall drink in one pub and Palace another,> did they meet for a punch up or is just a myth> about how rough the area was 30 years ago Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/170246-the-bishop/#findComment-1184117 Share on other sites
Orange owl
This area was a very "white"area back then. The black family who had my house before me,had to get a white friend to help buy as the estate agent would not deal with them,1975 ish Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/170246-the-bishop/#findComment-1184136 Share on other sites
teddyboy23
For laineygrace yeh it was the foresters it had a framed wooden front.the windows were 6ft by 2ft used to be around 10 or 12 of them all along the front .the side window was opened up when the bishop refurbished the last landlord was a fella called harry can't remember his wife's name . this was roundabout 30+years ago. That is undoubtedly true. So it is quite possible that, once upon a time it was not a dump, but it certainly became one. Mick Mac
I came to visit a friend in ED in 1999 and we went for a beer in the foresters. it was absolutely fine. I then moved to ED in 2001, and it was already a bit rougher than I remembered - by the time it closed it was a dive. The Bishop is my least favourite pub in ED. its most recent refurb is horrible. JohnL
Checked Beerintheevening - The foresters obviously didn't have any internet presence but some great early Bishop posts by Scott including in 2005"the third rate magician is honing his act for his upcoming TV show, he charges nothing and is generally very well received. I guess had he been really good he would have made the scary youths disappear" Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/170246-the-bishop/#findComment-1184187 Share on other sites
Louisa
So most of the negative reviews of this pub come from the late 90's onwards. Let me just remind you all, East Dulwich existed 30/40/50 years ago too, and it was a massively popular pub back in the day. As was the Palmerston, and the Plough. Had some great times here, and if I hear the words 'dodgy' or 'rough' anymore ill run around my garden naked with a traffic cone on my head.Louisa. So maybe it had passed its prime> .....There was a major problem with the drainage right along that side / end oh LL at that time. All outlets were affected from the Palmerston to the EDTIn the Bishop there is a Drain cover in the back bar area that would of been there when it was the Foresters. The smell came from there, not the gents.Strangely enough I made a rare visit to The Bishop a week or so ago. The gents was out of order blocked. The EDT also still has problems. Don't know about other outlets but with so many Bars and Restaurants along that stretch, I suspect Huge Fat Bergs build up from time to time.Foxy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/170246-the-bishop/#findComment-1184208 Share on other sites

KidKruger
"The carpet was squidgy, and you could smell the stench from the gents from just about every seat in the pub. "That's because the punters used to wet themselves on the seats across which they were sprawled, when incapacitated by alcohol. So the whole place just stank of piss. That's why.Fact.
