MrBen
No. You find yourself sitting at the bar in a Dan Marino's Steakhouse concession at the Marriot by La Guardia airport. Eating an overdressed salad which you've paid for with a $20 BA food voucher because the last flights been cancelled. Whilst trying to avoid the gaze of a Bulgarian hooker to your right and an oversized, hair twirling female baggage handler from the Bronx who's just clocked off to your left.Such was the glamour of my last trip. Mick Mac
I know peterluger has a great reputation but when I went to NY he only was in brooklyn. So went to Wolfgangs on Park Avenue. It's the best steak I have ever had bar none. its in Donald Trumps top 5 best NY restaurants. Would also recommend McSorleys ale house for a beer as mentioned by Mr Ben. LadyTaTa
I was posted there for a few months - I managed to eat in quite a few places that would normally be out of my league because it was just over 2 dollars to the pound at the time. I also managed to put on quite a few pounds...My boyfriend and I ate at Jean George at the bottom of Central Park http://www.yelp.com/biz/jean-georges-new-york and we still think it's the best meal we ever had. I always remember the sommelier running his hand up and down our chosen area of the wine list and asking "Where does Sir feel comfortable?" but in a lovely non-patronising way. So funny. The food was simply amazing and we'd like to go back for our first wedding anniversary. Not cheap though!Otherwise, Gramercy Tavern has good food, great wine and a really nice atmosphere (I got all excited when they showed it on Masterchef :-$). It's just such a nice room if that makes sense. We only ever ate in the cheaper front part of the Tavern rather than the more formal restuarant, but it was still great. Oh and if the weather is nice you can have a drink and some food on the lake in Central Park (I would go to the cheaper outide bar bit than the overly formal restuarant). Very romantic setting. Maybe more for a lunch though than a special occasion dinner. http://www.thecentralparkboathouse.com/These are three places I wouldn't feel any fear about recommending. Hope you have a lovely time! mockney piers
Thanks again for all the suggestions. We have booked a spot at the River Cafe but it's touch and go whether we'll make it, let's just say no delays allowed, so will book a spot at Jean Georges on the requisite one month in advance and will go for one of the two. Many of the others we reckon are huuuuge contenders for the saturday and sunday, lunch and dinner, so we're going to try as many as we can squeeze in to take advantage of not having our adorable munchkin with us (who strained out the smelliest poo of all time right next to a very unappreciative (and grumpy beforehand frankly) couple at Meson Candido in Segovia this weekend to much laughter and consternation respectively, so clearly not table trained enough for the likes of Jean Georges who I suspect don't do high chairs!). LadyTaTa
Kids, eh?! That's a very good story. I think Donald Trump has been seen in Jean Georges so they're probably used to that sort of behaviour :)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/16849-new-yoik-foodiness/page/2/#findComment-431031 Share on other sites
