Does anyone else out there have a daughter with wide feet, and if so, where on earth do you buy nice shoes for her?

My 1-year-old is size 4.5H and there's so little out there that'll fit her that I recently had to buy her some boys shoes instead. Not a huge problem as I'm not a fan of pink and fairies and glitter etc anyway, but of course in this weather her feet are now too hot in them.

So hot that she removed and disposed of one of said shoes yesterday. She is now shoeless and wearing some too-big baseball boots as a stopgap.

Any advice? Hoping for tip-offs about online shops I haven't tried yet, if poss...

Cheers!

the lordship lane one is useless - sorry! have never been able to buy children's shoes there as they never have the sizes - they are usually looking to the season ahead, so now is probably a good time to buy winter boots. The one in bromley is fine. I 'second' the order from the website idea.

what about biff?

Someone posted about a new children's shoe place in the east dulwich warehouse recently I believe.

My daughter is an H fitting too and always has shoes about a 1/2 size to a size too big for her because of it. I go to a specialist shoe shop which sells loads of European shoes as found Clarks a bit hopeless. I am actually an Old=EastDulwichian so I go to one in Kew - it's called the Shoe Station. Possibly they would know of other shops like them or you could try one of stockists to see where else they supply - my daughters current shoes are Geox . She's also had a lot of Ricosta.

Last year I got the same pair constantly from Clarks and stupidly forgot how long she had had them - as a consequence her little two toes on each foot are curved inwards. I feel like the worst mother in the world. So it's really worth finding a good shoe shop if your daughter has super wide feet like mine as they can grow out of shoes very quickly - sometimes my daughter's only last a month.

Is it Clarks who said she is an H fitting? They tried to tell me that of my daughter when 18mths old. She was an F on the measure but the shoes just didn't appear wide enough and they decided she was an H but I could see that the shoes were not deep enough (from the floor to the top of the foot) and so cut into the top of her foot. H's looked ridiculously silly - gapping at the outer sides but still pinching on the top of the foot. Got Start Rites instead. They are deeper and cover the high instep which is the problem not the width of the foot. Hope that makes sense. Anyway much as we have had plenty of Clarks shoes in our house for all 3 kids I think the staff are not all they are cracked up to be at fitting. Try diff styles yourself from diff shops and don't get too focused on sticking to a particular sz - bet you have shoes of diff szs in your wardrobe.

Yes, she was measured in the shop on Lordship Lane and she was an H fitting in Clarks shoes. After all your advice I shall shop around! Thanks for the brand names. One shoe shop I rang said Ecco might be good too as they come up wide. To be honest, I think her feet are also just quite fat and agree that it's the depth as much as the width that's hard to find. Mary Janes seem to cut in, which is why she's been wearing boys ones until now. She's been walking for quite a few months now, so I had to go for substance over style.

We're actually moving house to Twickenham tomorrow, so I shall definitely pay a visit to Shoe Station in Kew. Good call.

Thank you, ladies, I knew you'd come up trumps.

Shoe Station is brilliant it has toys they can play with in it (can be good, can be bad!) but it definitely helped when my daughter HATED shoe shopping after all the debacle we had with wonky toes last year. Now she loves going there. They have really lovely girls shoes. Can be quite hard getting her out of there though..... Shoe shop bit at the back, past the toys you have to pay for..... Enjoy!

ps my daughter was 20 months when she got wonky toes- they grow REALLY fast between 18 months - 2 years so don;t make my mistake. Totally worth shopping around.

    • I believe that Crown Post Offices are normally owned by the Post Office, and are frequently in valuable high street sites, so I would not be surprised if their sale value (or rentals to be derived if not sold) would be enticing, particularly for those offices running at slim or no profit margins. Happy to be proven wrong, of course.

    • It is a challenge.  These sorts of services are increasingly expensive to deliver as fewer and fewer people use them.  Most people don't want to have to go back to using their lunch hour to queue up at the bank or Post Office.  So the options  are - reduce the service, make it more expensive or the tax payer subsidises it.
