So, it looks like Heathrow or Gatwick; surprise, surprise!


For me, the elephant in the room is this: 24 HOUR FLIGHTS OVER LONDON!


But, there's always a silver lining and by the time Heathrow's expanded, I'll be either dead or deaf!


(p.s. I'm not a Boris fan but, for once, he's talking sense).

If you go to Dulwich Park all you'll hear is Jet after Jet screaming overhead this was never the case it?s a totally new phenomenon.


It's only been for the last 18 month previously they spread the flights, now all landings into Heathrow pass over and turn over East Dulwich and they do so at lower heights between 1,000 and 1,800 ft.


Landings begin from 4.15 depending.


I've tried earplugs "?150 made to measure in soft silicone sleep plugs" but after 5 hours they begin hurting and wake me up so they don't help.


Secondary and double glazing doesn't help because the Jets make a low level rumble "thunder" type noise and also screech thrust "whistle noise" and a combination of the two which drone those noises pass through walls roofs and all windows regardless.


Some people are not affected "bad hearing etc" others "like me" are driven insane.


As it's been an issue for the last 18 months many people haven't registered the change once you notice you will realise the problem is now constant unceasing and intrusive.


It?s the equivalent of suddenly finding yourself living next to or under a motorway except the noise created by Jet aircraft is impossible for many people to tolerate unlike motorway noise the volume and pitch created by jet engines affects people in a way which is impossible to ignore.

Bob that's an image of the flights from 2012 when they began the narrowing and move south of the flights into Heathrow.

Try and find one from 2011 .... I'd be surprised if you can.


Heathrow have now concentrated every landing to the South where they previously concentrated the flights over the Thames.


Try find the radar results from 2007 - 2011 I can't .


The image for 2013 will be far far narrower and also the change in approach height isn't shown and that height has also dropped by 1,000 ft.

Now we have some real data - we can make a comparison. So let's compare Ian's average morning 4.30 - 5.30 on Westerley operations in 2008 - to the Friday just gone in 2014, same time, Westerley operations again.

Conclusion: flight landing patterns between 4.30 and 5.30am are have remained largely unchanged (both in terms of how many planes pass over and how low they fly) - over the last five years.


Now we just need the data for the other 23 hours of the day.. aren't 'the facts' fun?!

whilst bob seems spot on here (and by golly that map is interesting, right!! over my house) is there any decent data for city as they seem to bank over my house too and are much noisier.


I should add that aircraft noise has never bothered me at all, in fact I find it rather comforting.

I'll miss the planes too

Pretty sure webtrak doesn't cover City (not yet, anyway) - but some other tracking system will no doubt. Flightradar24 should (I think?) and works in near realtime - though you'd need to buy the app to access extra features like flight altitudes, Millets raincoats, packed lunches and living at home with your Mother at the age of 40. Though we're on Westerleys today so no City incomings.



Personally - on days when I do feel they're intrusive - I find the Heathrow ones more annoying than the City ones (lower, steeper glide angle, shorter sound bursts) which I don't hardly mind at all for some reason. And I find it quite easy to forget about all of them for several weeks at a time - until this thread re-appears.

I really enjoy reading your posts on this thread *Bob* - so thanks for the data, and the maps! I too only seem to notice the planes intermittently, and they don't ever bother me. That's not to say I love plane noise - whenever I am in putney it seems much worse.

The noise is a useful indicator as to what time my kids are waking me up in the morning. If they shout "DADDDDYYYY" and I can't hear any planes then it's a definite "GO BACK TO SLEEEEP".

If i can hear them but it's dark then they can get into bed with us and I can but hope that the whirring jets and basso rumble will soothe me to sleep.


The only time they're intrusive is in the summer with the balcony doors open, sometimes the telly needs to be pretty loud just to hear it.

Can I draw your attention to the HM Government e-petition website which offers a voice to campaigners wanting issues debated in Parliament. Remember these flights will only increase over time the future is quite bleak!


I know that there has been a huge increase in flights over East Dulwich in the last couple of years and the intensity has never been as bad as it is now.


Between contracts I'm at home in ED and I notice daytime flights are now constant and the early morning flights start at 4.30 am these aircraft fly low over London and cause misery to millions of people many are not aware exactly what it is that's causing them to have a poor nights sleep as other noise masks the Jet drone past 5am.


I you value quality of life then banning flight over London from 1am to 6am is a must.
