anyway, i am going to try to see a doctor tomorrow, but does anyone have any advice on what i can do to help myself between now and then? i am supposed to be working in the morning, but I'm not sure that it is such a good idea :(

Oh no poor you Sophie!! I don't have any practical advice as have so far not suffered from mastitis but do remember something about getting baby to feed in whatever position helps massage affected areas (bit hard with 10mo I imagine though). However am posting mainly to bump this thread and also suggest ringing Seldoc on 0208 693 9066 as they may be able to see you tonight (Dulwich hospital) or phone you through a prescription for first thing tomorrow morning.

Big hugs to you get well soon, let me know if you need anythng tomorrow xxx

Hi Sophie

Lots and lots of sympathy and hope it improves very soon. Easier said than done but if you can avoid work tomorrow morning, then do, as rest will really make a difference to you.

I found the la leche league pages to be massively helpful and full of tips, hopefully a few of them will work for you:

Take care and hang in there,

Crokes

Can you tell where the blockage is, Sophie?

If so, try and feed with your daughter's chin pointing towards that sector of breast. It can lead to some interesting contortions, but that is where her suck is most powerful. You can also try massaging the blockage towards the nipple. Firmly stroking the breast with a comb can help, preferably under a hot shower or in the bath.

But sympathies, mastitis is horrible.

I hope you are feeling better sophiechristy. I had a question about mastisis which you or the other posters to this thread might know the answer to. On Saturday I came down with flu-like symptoms, but with the addition of nausea and vomitting. My breasts did not feel sore or have lumps. Those symptoms had cleared completely by Sunday morning and I thought I must have had a vomitting bug or food poisoning. However, last night and today I have started feeling very slight twinges in my right breast which occur every two hours or so, but again no breast lumps or soreness. Having looked online I now see that flu-like symptoms are indicative of mastisis. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I have encountered no problems or pain breastfeeding or expressing which I have done throughout. Any help would be appreciated and I hope I am not hijacking the OP.

Nearly three years on from the last time I had mastitis and still this thread makes me come out in goose bumps.

Uptime - my experience is very clear pain, so much so that one time I couldn't move my arm either. Then all the associated shivers, shakes, body aches (oh the memory). Of course, if in doubt you should always see your GP.

Sophie - I hope you've seen gp and got whatever you need. Lots of warm showers, yes that comb trick, feeding with chin pointing. You may be given antibiotics. Once in NYC I was even sent off to a 'breast doctor' with mastitis, which was a great way to get a good check, and very sobering to realise that my problem, although very very painful, would pass. And of course sleep, and relaxation. What's that?

Feel better,

SummerMum

uch much sympathy from me, I had this with my daughter, I can just reiterate what others have said hot showers, massaging the area towards the nipple (although I know that really hurts!) and just feed and express as much as you possibly can. If you can stay off work do, I hope it passes quickly.

uptime - I had flu like symptoms for about 2 days but then got a really obvious hot lump and pain in the breast, no vomiting though. If there is no pain in the breast I'd guess it's not mastitis but probably worth checking with a GP anyway. Hope your feeling better soon too!

    • I went to the early meeting, it was just the usual attempt to placate local residents.  I guess the main points were that due to the new flood alleviation 'bunds' they can't use the usual entrance opp Harris Boys to bring in equipment etc, so they & the council are proposing using the gates opp Harris Girls and laying trackway all the way across to the site. I raised the point that that section of road is always busy with cars parked both sides, they said they'd look into restrictions. I also asked if they'd considered that there will be students taking GCSE exams at that time who could be disturbed by the activity, they said they hadn't (what a surprise...) and would talk to the school. I also pointed out that the majority of damage was caused by the trackway, so they are effectively knowingly causing more damage than last year. Note that there is more trackway all around the site than previously.  The increased site footprint is apparently replacing space lost to the 'bunds'. They said they used that space for storage, but curiously none of the extra space will be for storage, so it is actually increasing the size of the festival. I pointed out that the entrance area is on a Gaelic football pitch, they said the council said it wouldn't be in use at that time, I responded that it would, by families trying to have picnics & play sports with their kids because the rest of the park has been annexed. I also suggested that this was the start of the festival creeping further east, to which there was no comment.  The extra day is for a "community day", details of exactly what this would entail - music, workshops, food, theatre - who requested / wanted it, and how many attendees they expected, were very sketchy. I suggested it was just a fairly transparent attempt to curry favour with the local community and make a precedent for a longer festival, rather than a genuine & honest  desire to contribute something truly beneficial. There were no definitive plans to tackle the anti social behaviour, littering or environmental damage over & above the ineffective actions of previous years.  Official minicab drop off / pick up will be by the Clock House, but again no way of enforcing this. Gala are constantly citing the opportunities for local acts, traders & employees as benefits from the festival, however they admitted not having any figures to quantity this. I requested they therefore cease to use these as benefits without proof of validity. I once again raised the issue of the wildlife survey they commission being woefully inadequate, as it only surveys within the site, and seems only concerned with bird nests. There are other forms of wildlife - they were unaware of the Stag beetle population in the SW corner - and lots of birds nesting in the surrounding trees which will be disturbed. Again, no response, which confirms it is just a tick box exercise rather than a genuine attempt to guage the impact to flora & fauna. That's all for now, I'm sure others have more. Basically, same as always, but bigger & longer...
    • Glad you got sorted. Meantime, hoping for an update from someone on what happened at the GALA consultation meeting with local residents, a few days ago. Especially interested in thinking on their proposed event extension and footprint.
    • Coming from LL direction there is no problem getting into TJHC
    • Don't worry, the link came through just in time, and I'm in the queue for tickets now
