Fiacre
Allow plenty of time but why not catch a 12 to piccadilly and walk the last 5 minutes, only one bus fare each way. Marmora Man
All depends on your start point - the No 12 goes from Dulwich Library to Oxford Circus, stopping just before and after Piccadilly Circus, which is a short walk to the Ritz. Two Oyster journeys a day would, I think, cost ?2.80 - so good value, tho' the journey time would be about 50 mins each way but he should be sure of a seat on the inbound journey. zeban
I'd say 63/363 to Elephant and Castle. Then pick up the 12 from there. Otherwise it takes for ever on the 12. zeban
Yes Karter, the Peckham Rye park end of ED. That's where you get the 12 too. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/16440-travel-to-the-ritz-hotel/#findComment-422446 Share on other sites
witsd
176 to Trafalgar Square, then walk for five minutes. From Goose Green, that would be about an hour, maybe a little longer between 7 and 9. zeban
It's alot quicker to get the 63/363 to Elephant and then picking up the 12 or 176, rather than the 12 or 176 all the way but getting just the one bus is cheaper obviously. Bus pass sounds like an idea? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/16440-travel-to-the-ritz-hotel/#findComment-422484 Share on other sites
witsd
Depends where they have been picking the 37 up from. If at Goose Green area, 176 only is faster than getting to a (3)63 point by a long way. Plus, with a bus pass, you get a huge amount of other possible bus combinations along the same route. (There can sometimes be days when the fastest route is P13, 68, 1, 11, for example) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/16440-travel-to-the-ritz-hotel/#findComment-422491 Share on other sites
Applespider
If he's got a bike, has he thought about cycling it? It should take less than 30 minutes even if he doesn't push it. Many companies do have showers/bike storage these days and then it would be free. The other benefit is a more or less fixed time for the commute which isn't always the case with other public transport. If not, then a bus pass so he can take any route is probably cheapest. mashton
It's safer to cycle late at might, with less traffic. You should be able to get free cycle training through Southwark.Definitely cycle it. PeckhamRose
Good luck to him at The Ritz!My Grandad used to be the Head Doorman / Concierge at The Ritz, and the other day I was idly passing by (no, not Saturday!) and popped in and there was a man working there who - as a boy - learned everything he knew from my Grandad and still worked there as now as Head Porter. My best wishes to your son!! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/16440-travel-to-the-ritz-hotel/#findComment-423299 Share on other sites
Mike Dodd
Thanks Peckham rose, what a lovely surprize for you to find this young man still working there and remembering your Grandfather,, My son has just started as a chef so a wonderful start to his career in such a grand setting Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/16440-travel-to-the-ritz-hotel/#findComment-423302 Share on other sites
Andyk
I work round the corner from there. My favourite route is 185 to victoria and then nice 15 minute walk past buckingham palace and through green park. Can take slightly longer during term times going past camberwell but generally done in 50 minutes. And if running late can hop on tube at either vauxhall or victoria and make up the time on the tube to green park. PeckhamRose
Mike Dodd, the man who remembers my Grandad was a young man when he started there but is now in his sixties; this was a long time ago! I hope your son has a great time and indeed the above post involving walking through the parks and round Buck House sounds lovely... and healthy too!
