bev
Great picture! I used to volunteer with a few owl conservation charities in europe, and can recommend the Barn Owl Trust resources - http://www.barnowltrust.org.uk/infopage.html?Id=49 This is a useful page if anyone else finds themself in this situation! EDOliver
What a fantastic story this is and love the pic. Would never have thought we'd have owls around here, just presumed it was too busy/built up. I'll keep my eyes peeled from now on! orlakeilyhandbag
Britain's rarest owlThe Long-eared Owl is Britain's rarest owl species and notoriously difficult to survey. It is thought that there is a UK population of just 1,500-2000 pairs. Strongly associated with conifer plantations, the Long-eared Owl actually requires a dual habitat; dense forests in which to roost and nest, and open rough grassland for hunting; particularly favouring Upland and Moorland areas.Wonder what it was doing in south-east london? I understand they are usually found in the south-west of england. barcat
any injured birds can be taken to the nearest/local vet because they are legally required to take them in. i found this out when I found an injured bird myself last year. They can have all sorts of mites though so lift them with a towel and place them in a box covered but with breathing holes to keep them calm. BrandNewGuy
As spring's with us, it's worth a reminder not necessarily to move baby birds that aren't in their nests. Here is the RSPB's advice on fledglings, nestlings and injured birds. Thesighting of the Little Owl follows the installation of five nesting boxes by the council?s wildlifeofficers last autumn as part of a cleaner greener safer scheme.
