Mum

Hi nunheadmum,

No, You're probably not! Sorry if the information isn't clear.

The definition is broadly this:

"A flash mob is a large group of strangers who assemble in a public space and perform a bizarre or pointless act for a brief time then disperse again in order to amuse or confuse those who witness it."

Think the T-mobile advert of the dancing in Liverpool Street Station(although not technically a real flash mob) or things like flash mob pillow fights, knitting, standing still etc.

Our aim is simply to get as many grown ups and kids together as possible on Comic Relief Day, this Friday, 18th March at a specified time and place to have a load of fun suddenly starting to dance in a public space and then stopping and going about their business as if nothing has happened!

We want to try and raise money by people making a donation to Comic Relief to take part and also asking other people to make a donation to 'dare' them to do it!

Mrs Stuntmanbob, please don't worry at all. It doesn't matter about doing the dance properly or anything like that, it's just about getting involved with something silly for an incredibly good cause. The song is 'Do You Love Me (Now that I can dance)by the Contours and is a really easy song to dance to. As long as you can do a version of the twist and the mashed potato, you'll be fine!!! You can learn a few of the moves or just freestyle along - it really doesn't matter, it's just about local people getting together and making something happen.

Any other questions, please just ask and don't be put off by the air of mystery - it's all very safe and child and baby friendly. Mum Mob have all got several young children each and are very far from being professional dancers!

Please just join in and have a laugh.

Thank you both so much and everyone else who has signed up so far or PM'd us about coming along.

Don't know how many people saw the Comic Relief documentary 'Famous,Rich and In The Slums'? If you didn't catch it, please try to see it on i-player this week.

It was unbelievably heart-breaking and humbling viewing and certainly puts a few things into perspective about our lives here in East Dulwich.

We all give and receive so much support to each other on this forum, wouldn't it be a wonderful thing if we could channel some of that spirit into practical help for people in abject desperation with no-one looking out for them. Orphan children raising siblings alone, women working as prostitutes so that their children can eat, babies and women dying needlessly in childbirth....the list goes on and on.

In that context, donating a few quid to jig about in public or just donating to support those who are doesn't seem like such a raw deal.

Here's the link to the Mum Mob justgiving page if you'd like to be a part of this in any way that you can

Well done all Mum Mob recruits!

Operational update just in from Mum Mob HQ:

At 4.27pm today, Friday 18th March 2011, the Comic Relief Flash Mob hit an unsuspecting Sainsbury's on Dog Kennel Hill.

The fruit and veg aisles were turned into an impromptu dance floor for just under 3 minutes as more than 50 Mum Mobbers (big and small), danced up a storm doing the mashed potato and the twist to the sounds of "Do you Love Me?" by The Contours.

Shocked shoppers and store staff soon joined in the Flash Mob spirit, giving encouragement, clapping, cheering and even joining in dancing with the Mobbers.

Despite the melee, two conscientious Sainsbury's staff members continued steadfastly restocking the bananas, despite being surrounded by dancing, whooping Mums, Grans, Dads and kids. We applaud their dedication to duty!

Thanks to the sterling efforts of all our Mum Mobbers and supporters, over ?800 has been raised for Comic Relief so far, including giftaid and cash donations, which is a remarkable amount for 3 minutes of tomfoolery.

Mum Mob HQ would like to pass on our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has taken part and donated so incredibly generously, sometimes more than once, thank you so much.

If you were shopping in Sainsury's today and witnessed the carry-on or if you know someone who bravely took part in the nerve wracking Top Secret mission, please consider donating to support Comic Relief through our just giving page:

    • I went to the early meeting, it was just the usual attempt to placate local residents.  I guess the main points were that due to the new flood alleviation 'bunds' they can't use the usual entrance opp Harris Boys to bring in equipment etc, so they & the council are proposing using the gates opp Harris Girls and laying trackway all the way across to the site. I raised the point that that section of road is always busy with cars parked both sides, they said they'd look into restrictions. I also asked if they'd considered that there will be students taking GCSE exams at that time who could be disturbed by the activity, they said they hadn't (what a surprise...) and would talk to the school. I also pointed out that the majority of damage was caused by the trackway, so they are effectively knowingly causing more damage than last year. Note that there is more trackway all around the site than previously.  The increased site footprint is apparently replacing space lost to the 'bunds'. They said they used that space for storage, but curiously none of the extra space will be for storage, so it is actually increasing the size of the festival. I pointed out that the entrance area is on a Gaelic football pitch, they said the council said it wouldn't be in use at that time, I responded that it would, by families trying to have picnics & play sports with their kids because the rest of the park has been annexed. I also suggested that this was the start of the festival creeping further east, to which there was no comment.  The extra day is for a "community day", details of exactly what this would entail - music, workshops, food, theatre - who requested / wanted it, and how many attendees they expected, were very sketchy. I suggested it was just a fairly transparent attempt to curry favour with the local community and make a precedent for a longer festival, rather than a genuine & honest  desire to contribute something truly beneficial. There were no definitive plans to tackle the anti social behaviour, littering or environmental damage over & above the ineffective actions of previous years.  Official minicab drop off / pick up will be by the Clock House, but again no way of enforcing this. Gala are constantly citing the opportunities for local acts, traders & employees as benefits from the festival, however they admitted not having any figures to quantity this. I requested they therefore cease to use these as benefits without proof of validity. I once again raised the issue of the wildlife survey they commission being woefully inadequate, as it only surveys within the site, and seems only concerned with bird nests. There are other forms of wildlife - they were unaware of the Stag beetle population in the SW corner - and lots of birds nesting in the surrounding trees which will be disturbed. Again, no response, which confirms it is just a tick box exercise rather than a genuine attempt to guage the impact to flora & fauna. That's all for now, I'm sure others have more. Basically, same as always, but bigger & longer...
    • Glad you got sorted. Meantime, hoping for an update from someone on what happened at the GALA consultation meeting with local residents, a few days ago. Especially interested in thinking on their proposed event extension and footprint.
    • Coming from LL direction there is no problem getting into TJHC
    • Don't worry, the link came through just in time, and I'm in the queue for tickets now
