Just thought this may be useful. Attempted break in at about 5.30 this evening while we were sitting in the living room.He took a look in the window and on seeing us decided to leg it,obviously.Police have attended and apparently burglary has increased compared to this time last year.Might be worth being vigilant.

Just to say that we were burgled on 8 Feb around 4.30am. We were asleep upstairs. We have a UPVC door and I have since read an article in the South London Press about these types of doors being targetted. The burglaries were almost identical to mine. I am mentioning this as a warning to those who have these doors - even if you pull up handle to lock, it would appear they are using something through the letterbox to get in. They took everything downstairs of value, including the keys to my car, which they escaped in. Again, I have been telling friends to keep keys, cards etc upstairs - this was the advice given to me by the police. I have also been double locking door. I was 2 weeks away from giving birth at the time, so the whole incident was extra stressful. Victim support were great, came round with extra locks etc - I know this is a bit 'horse bolted' thing, but it gave me some piece of mind.

We live in Nunhead, near the Harris Girls Academy.

I am not at all surprised you were targeted in broad day light. I was burgled last year in the morning as my housemate was fast asleep (wore ear plugs and took a sleeping pill do was totally out of it), I always thought there was no way in apart from the front door since the back is very secure since you'd need to jump many other gardens to get to the back. And how did they get in? Through the front door, kicked it in, pure opportunists who got away with a lot of expensive stuff. The cop who attended did say burglaries were up in most areas of London (not just round here). Since then I have installed an alarm and keep the bolt locked even when at home. Everyone needs to use their common sense and keep there properties secure..... if not there will always be an opportunist who try his/her luck....
The UPVC door issue is an annoying one. The Local authority has replaced most council homes with this kind of door - replacing doors that had seperate mortice and yale locks that were far more tricky to open via a letterbox (but not impossible). UPVC doors on the other hand have that lovely large handle bang in the middle of them - easy to pull down from the outside. There is a dead bolt on UPVC doors. It needs to be used at all times even when you are inside.
