Oh yeah.. that (whatever)

You're right Alan. You have put your finger on my very nub. I have made the pursuit of wealth and worldly goods central to my life. I did so by choosing a career with very little chance of success (and guaranteeing a few years old the dole) - and then choosing to live without much of a mortgage - thus requiring even less need to generate wealth.

Smug? Maybe. Wealth-obsessed? Quite the opposite.

AlanD - Said "You are a bit hard on people especially those with status symbols you can't afford or conversely houses that aren't as good as yours". I just wondered why you think that people who dislike ostentatious status symbols are envious? I dislike flashy displays of wealth because they are crass and can exaccerbate class divisions.

How can anyone with a place in the middle or upper rungs of the ladder, but who live in close proximity to people who inhabit the bottom rungs of the ladder, expect to be able to flash their cash without getting up people's noses.

If you go to certain areas of the world, you are told not to walk about with your valuables on display, because it is a poor country/area etc and you are likely to get robbed/beaten up/kidnapped etc. Most people who travel abroad understand this.

Why do you think poor people in this country should feel more welcoming to 'rich' tourists/incomers etc than the poor in other countries?

Why do you think you have a right to be safe from attack when you don't ensure your poor neighbours manage to grow up safe, properly fed and well educated?

If we, as a community and society don't look after the children born into disadvantaged situations, then we will get the society we deserve, and unless you are going to build a huge wall around you, you had better get used to it because with peak oil and climate change induced inflation, and without some kind of equitable sharing of our dwindling resources, it will only get worse.

So confused by this forum- people read/dont read/understand/dont understand...

so, ive wanted a Porsche all my life and am now (nearly)in the postion to pick 1 up (post wedding though-otherwise im told ill end up footing the bill for the whole thing!).

People will think im a complete dick.

I can only park it on the street outside my house.

What do i do?

I do not currently have a Porsche but all the same my car has been Keyed in ED this week (so cant get any worse on that front..)

ps, my GF's dyslexic dad is having a bit of a mid-life crisis and has bought a new Porch!!

hmmmm

Firstly, why would people think you?re a 'dick?? Porsches are everywhere now ? I see them all the time and to me they are not really in the same category in terms of ?flashy/show off? as say Lamborghinis and Ferraris. I personally wouldn?t think someone was a prick for driving a Porsche.

2nd, if your current car has already been scratched or keyed intentionally, then it more than likely will occur again if you buy a more prestigious model.

Anyway, good luck with the wedding!

    • Hi all, Would appreciate any help in locating this package that was misdelivered on the morning of 27th December - potentially near my flat, halfway up Lordship Lane, near GBK/Jumping Bean. I've alerted Royal Mail, and the senders - but wondering if anyone recognises the flat doors, or doormats in the picture? Many thanks, and Happy New Year!
    • Firstly in response to @Del in ED there was an email that got sent to me with plans attached of the preposed layout and they asked for opinions/feedback-I gave mine and my concerns..I dont know how many others recieved or responded to the email, from what I see the decision had been made regardless of feedback. @the_hermit In response to your comments there are very few lowish weight free weights and the weighted bolster like bags that I used to lift at 5 kgs now consist of 3 X 15kgs and 3X 25kgs nothing lighter than 15kgs. as regards walking I walk 6miles + every day at work and walking outside of work is a form of relaxation for me. Speaking purely for myself but I'm probably not alone in this I have issues with running due to past ankle injuries and I do gather from my orrthopaedic (sp?) guy at the hospital that running on a treadmil is actually better as regards posible impact injuries than running on tarmac. Not all classes are at convenient times (I dont get home from work until gone 7pm not everyone works locally or from home) and besides..I find when I do try and book a class they almost always have a waitlist with places only becoming available a few hours before..not enough time for me to go home get my kit and get to the gym after work.. again I'm probably not alone in not being able to just 'book into a class'. Finally I'm in my early 60's and have been a regular gym goer for over 25years...Dulwich leisure centre has served my needs and those of many others who like myself have had to undergo major surgery and injuries for at yeast 10of those years by having enough weight machines and cardio machines to build back strength with less risk of causing further damage. Now it feels much more like theres a bias towards heavier weights and boxing -a lot more 'macho' and less inclusive. I used to see a lot of older less fit members than myself there- I don't feel that the needs of those members of the local community have been taken into account with the new layout and the scrapping of various machines. Not to mention the new equipment feels very cheaply constructed and the 'chin and dip' machine had already snapped and broken when I visited just a few days into opening.
    • Hi - I am a 16 year old living in East Dulwich keen to help local families with babysitting and cat sitting services.
