I think calling a Porsche owner a "flash git" is fair enough, to be honest... after all, you don't buy cars like that unless you want to be noticed (especially in London). Sure, it's not exactly a compliment, but it's the kind of comment that can be taken as a light-hearted jibe, perhaps even peppered with a hint of envy.

Both Brendan and Jeremy make fair points.

Nice tasteful old 60's Porsche = car enthusiast with an eye for style, probably prepared to get his hands dirty.

Two year-old cheesey Carrera = flash git with zero taste and no imagination.

I would never be such an idiot as to drag a key down the side of the latter: I'm already satisfied with the knowledge that the owner is most likely a bit of a cock.

I know people are entitled to make their point, but...

Is it the considered view of the majority on the forum that owners of, say, a 2 year old Porsche are "flash gits" and "cocks"?

If so I am embarassed to have spent much of the last year here.

Let's just assume for a moment that its my Porsche that got vandalised, would *Bob*, Keef and Maurice like to make themselves known and we can talk about it?

I'm gonna have to point out that a couple of people's opinion isn't the majority of the forum (I make it 0.18%).

Anyway, I don't think that owners of a 2 year old Porsche are "flash gits" and "cocks", I'll admit I'm slightly envious of them but I'd rather my scooter round town anyday.

Well then Jon you get a big sympathetic hand on the shoulder from me.

If one's suffered a crime it really shouldn't matter whether that crime was the loss of a funky friendly VW camper van, or a porsche.

I'm guessing we're seeing some schandenfreude manifesting here, so come on forumites, a little empathy here please.

"I'll admin I'm slightly envious of them" schadenfreude and freudian slips!!

Jonsuissy, as a previous owner of a 2 year old Porsche I can confirm that I was indeed a flash git and a bit of a cock. But times change and so does taste and now I'm just a git (without a Porsche).

I once lived on Underhill and regularly had cars broken into or keyed. On one night both cars were broken into. My neighbour regularly had the whole front bumper section of her 4x4 stolen, obviously to order.

I wouldn't confuse OWNING a 2 year old Porsche, and having it vandalised

I would be against any kind of vandalism, even if provoked mightily (eg someone doing same to my car)

But if you are asking the question what do people on here think of owners of 2 year old Porsches - and you seem to be... that will invite a response

I can only speak for myself but I wouldn't go as far as some of the comments but I would think "hmmmmm, it's not exactly classy". But then people make snap judgments on appearances all the time (it's surely one of the reasons someone would buy such a car, no?)

I definitely don't think it's as bad as personalised number plates mind you

*Bob* - no as it happens I don't.

I'm off though, this is not a nice place.

I think this could be a fantastic forum, its just that people can hide behind their keyboards and say these truly awful things without thinking.

That poor guy has had his car damaged quite badly.

How he spends his money is up to him.

I myself have "wasted" an awful lot of money on a quite nice Home Entertainment system, if the likes of *Bob* & co were to come round for a beer and see it, would they say, "cock", "flash git" or whatever. A much nicer and more enlightened reaction would be, hey that's nice, I might try and save up for that.

Perhaps that's just me.

Indeed.. I only speak for myself. Just one in a thousand on this day alone (handshakes all round etc)

I've already made it clear, crystal clear, in black and white, that it is only idiots who cause criminal damage to other people's property, for whatever reason.

All that is left is the flash git / cock thing. If jonsuissy is indeed the owner of a two year-old Carrera, then he might assume I'm calling him a flash git and a cock, in which cash he might be upset. So I thought I ought to ask, just to be clear.. you know.

Jon,

An internet forum is about writing.. and reading. If you are (as it seems) lacking in the skills to read posts properly, then you're probably right - it isn't the place for you.

Incidentally, there is no connection between an expensive home entertainment system inside your home for you to enjoy, and a cheesey ?50k style-free car, placed outside your home as a status-symbol for other people to admire/laugh at.

"A much nicer and more enlightened reaction would be, hey that's nice, I might try and save up for that."

Nicer maybe but I'm not sure why enlightened. Would you think that of one of those big yellow humvee things?

No, I didn't think so.

I have no intention of owning a car while I live in london, but I've fancied on of these for a bit

and would fully acknowledge people saying I'm a bit of an idiot ;-)

That looks like a perfectly sensible mode of transport Mockney. I think you should get one. I have been looking at big chrome covered motorbikes recently. I?m also growing my hair. Is 30 too young for a midlife crisis?

Anyway I have a theory that cars have to prove themselves. If after 20 years they are still attractive and functional then they are great and worthy of praise. You can generally see when a new car is released whether it will have these qualities but some surprise you. BMW E30s are starting to look really good.

But then I?m an opinionated so and so. And at the moment I drive a newish vauxhaul asbo as Mrs B needs a ?practical? car for work and we can?t justify having 2 cars in London so I?m also a hypocrite.

Sorry you have been offended jonsuissy sometimes a little more than a pinch of salt is required on this forum.

Mockney

I was about to say I've always fancied a Reliant Robin like our near neighbour Del Boy - until I saw that it was sold for ?44,000 recently.

That would open such a can of worms wouldn't it, don't think I'll bother :)

Have to park it in my living room I suppose.

As penance for what?

For jonsuissy misreading my post - and jumping to the bizarre conclusion that somehow it is my heartfelt belief that Porsche Carrera owners deserve to have their cars vandalised.. and then going off in a huff?

Funny you should say that Brendan. It's a motorbike substitute as GF and family threatened to kidnap me and lock me in a shed forever if I went through with buying a bike. This looked like a second best.

It does 90mph apparently ... round corners.

Jonsuissy, 44 grand for a robin?!! A can of worms indeed, and I have a feeling you'd probably find one of those on the back too!

    • Hi all, Would appreciate any help in locating this package that was misdelivered on the morning of 27th December - potentially near my flat, halfway up Lordship Lane, near GBK/Jumping Bean. I've alerted Royal Mail, and the senders - but wondering if anyone recognises the flat doors, or doormats in the picture? Many thanks, and Happy New Year!
    • Firstly in response to @Del in ED there was an email that got sent to me with plans attached of the preposed layout and they asked for opinions/feedback-I gave mine and my concerns..I dont know how many others recieved or responded to the email, from what I see the decision had been made regardless of feedback. @the_hermit In response to your comments there are very few lowish weight free weights and the weighted bolster like bags that I used to lift at 5 kgs now consist of 3 X 15kgs and 3X 25kgs nothing lighter than 15kgs. as regards walking I walk 6miles + every day at work and walking outside of work is a form of relaxation for me. Speaking purely for myself but I'm probably not alone in this I have issues with running due to past ankle injuries and I do gather from my orrthopaedic (sp?) guy at the hospital that running on a treadmil is actually better as regards posible impact injuries than running on tarmac. Not all classes are at convenient times (I dont get home from work until gone 7pm not everyone works locally or from home) and besides..I find when I do try and book a class they almost always have a waitlist with places only becoming available a few hours before..not enough time for me to go home get my kit and get to the gym after work.. again I'm probably not alone in not being able to just 'book into a class'. Finally I'm in my early 60's and have been a regular gym goer for over 25years...Dulwich leisure centre has served my needs and those of many others who like myself have had to undergo major surgery and injuries for at yeast 10of those years by having enough weight machines and cardio machines to build back strength with less risk of causing further damage. Now it feels much more like theres a bias towards heavier weights and boxing -a lot more 'macho' and less inclusive. I used to see a lot of older less fit members than myself there- I don't feel that the needs of those members of the local community have been taken into account with the new layout and the scrapping of various machines. Not to mention the new equipment feels very cheaply constructed and the 'chin and dip' machine had already snapped and broken when I visited just a few days into opening.
