You know what...for christmas I am going to push the boat out and make home made dips for my family...see if they can tell the difference and see if my jeans still fit after!

Making the stuff doesnt fill the jeans - its scoffing it. Given the usual Christmas gross out, how would you tell if the dips had a filling effect?

"Auntie Nellie, here's a tub of homemade humus for Christmas" - is this really how you wish to share your seasonal cheer?

Yes, the way through my families heart is through their stomach...I actually dont eat all the christmas crap at christmas...my indulge is bailey in my coffee...yum yum!

good spot Asset - typo on my part. But surely the calories come from the additives and starch in the shop stuff and not from the natural ingredients (and that's even if you take calorie counting seriously.... calories are just one part of body mass... oops strayed onto the patch marked "obvious")

What?! Haringey for f*cks sake I used to live there back in 2002. Moved Sawf thinking it was where it's at.

>>it's chickpeas, garlic, lemon, olive oil and a bit of what you fancy <<

You forgot the Tahini - essential!. I made a huge batch of the stuff once in a blender and...well...you do end up with rather a lot! M & S do a lovely creamy houmous, but am more of a Tzatziki (spelling?) man myself....

    • Houses subject to these taxes aren't the average house though either.    They are ordinary houses that just happen to be marginally more expensive than the ones the Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer each rent out.
    • ??? Average London house prices in 1970 (from land registry) = £5190, £72,000 in today's money. London houses were getting on for 5 times the national average wage in 1970, if we used that as a formula that would be around £200k for an average London house today.
    • The average house in London was nothing like £68k in the sixties.  I suspect our fictional hard done by ED pensioner probably paid something more like £6k.  Also your interest calculations are  abit dodgy.  Our pensioner did not buy the house for £2m so would not be paying anything like that interest.    As for more recent buyers, I doubt many purchasers of £2m houses are doing so with a 95% mortgage. @Ebenezer I agree with CGT on primary residences. There are a few ways to cut this bit the fact remains housing wealth has been  massively undertaxed and it is a growing source of intergenerational inequality.

The long-term effects include a weaker economy, lower wages, and a failure to reduce the fiscal deficit as effectively as intended, partly because lower growth reduced tax revenues You can do the maths yourself
