I ripped an expensive new typre while driving along Peckham Rye on Friday, there was a burst water main and a huge hole in the road concealed by water I drove straight into it and promptly got a flat tyre and damaged front and back wheel rims, its going to cost me a fortune. Anyone had any experience trying to claim from the council for car damage due to poor road maintence?

Hi Jane7,

A few years ago I claimed from Southwark when I rode round a dark wet corner and promptly went through a Fire Hydrant that was missing a cover. I lifted my front wheel but the rear rim got trashed. They were responsible for the Hydrant so I wrote a letter explaining what happened accompanied by an estimate from a shop, a photo of the hole (ruler across it) and a description of the location. They paid me for a wheel rebuild (?77 or so) pretty quickly without a struggle.

Good luck.

Mr Asset

Well take a look down Hollydale road in Nunhead - the one with the 2 schools on - yep one's a primary school. It looks like the RAF were testing the runway bombs for the original gulf war down it, and yes it has been in that state since the 90's. But hey, no problem in 2004 the Lib Dems decided to re-surface some roads where they could win some votes, you know some of the more gentrified roads, of course they kept that plan like our RAF pilots...wait for it...under the radar...funny that!
You are right - Hollydale Road (especially the top part) is a disgrace. It is part of my round route having got a takeaway from Gibbon Road and it is so bumpy the bag always falls over. Seriouslt though I have deliberately avoided it on my motorbike in the past.
I reported the leak to Thames Water on 14th September and twice weekly from then on. On Friday evening around 6:30 pm I reported the two hugh potholes in the Road and was informed by Thames Water someone would look again that evening. I was delighted to see driving through Forest Hill Road on Saturday morning that it had been surrounded by barriers. I think you should get on to Thames Water. The leak is being casued by a burst water main on Piermont Green.

    • Professional and high quality work. Highly recommended. Brian and his team did an excellent job repairing and repainting damaged render on the side-wall of my terraced house. The job entailed work to the ridge of the roof. Brian organised a complicated but fairly priced scaffolding design that no other company offered (while being safe and licensed). Brian rebuilt damaged brick work, render and his paint work is incredibly neat. Brian’s experience shows in his work. I had great communication throughout the job.
    • Wouldn't it make more sense to ask the guy who posted the rumours for the source of the information? The Crown & Greyhound refurb was a big job - not surprising that it took longer than just a simple repainting. But renovating the Grove would be even bigger because it's totally wrecked, and there's a shortage of skilled labour and much more expensive materials now...
    • Rather bizarrely, I received a text from TJ surgery offering this service. To be clear, no data was asked for in the text so I don't suspect a scam but surely this is dodgy? Where does my DNA info end up and who would have access? I'm going to the surgery on the invite date to ask precisely this.
    • I used Emmaus https://emmaus.org.uk/slc/ to clear my grandfathers house last year. They were great. They all charge for this service so will come and give you a quote first.
