Ordered curry sauce with my chips and his scruffy mate was summoned to make the curry sauce which he done by boiling a kettle and pouring it over some kind of powder and stirring it for a while. battered sausage was inedible. Shame, because they were friendly people. Loutwo
Another vote for Ken?s. After reading the reviews on here, and the positive feedback online I went to get Cod and Chips last night. A decent, old fashioned, good quality fish and chip shop. Rare find in London, more like the fish and chips you would expect on the pier at the seaside. If you?ve not been before, I would highly recommend.Louisa. Bob Buzzard
I quite like that HR's in HH. I have to send Mrs B there because it's out of the bounds of ED so I can't go there. Dulwich Born And Bred
I find the Fish and Chips at Sema and Emily?s grim. None of my family can eat it. We take a trip to Ken?s to pay a fortune for the fish and chips there. Still not the best compared to all the lovely fish and chips we consumed in Dorset but the best out of a bad bunch around here.Anyone tried the fish and chips at Saucy on LL? Asset
I don't think Ken's is expensive at all! under a tenner for a portion of cod and chips that in my experience easily feeds 2 people and sometimes 3 if you're not super hungry. The pieces of cod he serves up are enormous. doogleflip
I didn't like Sea Cow. I ordered large haddock and chips once. Got home to discover 2 measly haddocks squashed together! Cheeky. Rosie's is pretty decent but again I ordered rock once and I noticed the fish smelled like ammonia so I couldn't eat it. I guess not that many people order the rock?edit to say I've been to Rosie's loads and it's usually decent. Absolutely standard.Saying that, I'm not a massive fan of Emily's either. Fish just not crispy enough. Help-Ma-Boab
Id kill for a black Pudding Supper. Just cant get them in England. A real loss for me. I did find a chippy doing battered hamburgers in my new town. A real bonus. Not a BP supper though.Chippies are so different in Scotland. Humdinger
I get that, but a good chip shop will have a vat/silver cauldron of it made up, kept warm and ready to serve. This is because the chip shop is so good and popular that they need it close to hand. The way it was prepared, in some old looking coffee mug by a mate in a grubby, paint stained t-shirt didnt make it very appetising, no matter the basic similarities of the actual make up of the sauce. fishbiscuits
I'm not convinced, I think curry sauce with chips is mainly a northern thing. I don't think many chippies down here will have a vat of warm curry sauce ready to serve. fishbiscuits
Loutwo Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Curry sauce is a welsh thing with chips, not> northern, that?s gravy.Curry sauce is common in Liverpool, Manc, Leeds chippies... much more so than London. And a quick Google seems to indicate that it's big in Ireland. Not sure about Wales... don't go there much... holloway
Curry sauce is massive in Ireland, it's where I first encountered the phenomenon. Emily's on North Cross is probably the best in Dulwich, I do find the bloke a bit too chatty though. KidKruger
You?d have thought with East Dulwich becoming gentrified, curry sauce would be strictly off the menu in any chip shop ! Loutwo
Some newbie types were moaning in Roses a few weeks ago requesting the battered sausages not to cooked in the same fryer as the fish and or chips. Back in my day when Steve?s was the best chippy around, you?d have been told where to get off! Louisa. Pugwash
When I lived in Holland - chips with either curry sauce or mayonnaise were the favourites. I preferred the roll mop bap as not a big chip fan. family thought I had odd tastes! Loutwo
Glad someone else remembers Steve?s, bob. Corner of Bellenden and Maxted Road. I remember going in there from childhood right up until the late 80?s. Italian family. They sometimes chucked in some batter crackling if you were a regular. Now THAT was a proper fish and chip shop.Louisa.
