Best chips shops in London

Now then. Chips.

We are still looking for a decent local chippy. Sea Cow is the usual place because the fish is usually good, but chip quality is variable. And I don't like 'posh chips' - you know - those chunky, quite hard ones. Chips should have a certain crisp to the outside but a certain mush in the middle. And it helps if they're a bit stuck-together.


The finest chips in the world, incidentally, are in a chip shop in the Midlands, where they coat the chips in a kind-of orange batter before they cook them. I have not found better.


Tried Emily's chips last week. Nothing special.

Apparently the on Forest Hill Road (ie Forest Hill itself, on the corner, I think someone said) are highly recommended.

I've always liked the chips that are quite soft, very full and stick together. Add to that onion vinegar, not too much salt, a pickled onion and and a gherkin and you're away.


The Blue anchor in Bermondsey - it is a bit of a trip - makes them not too hard, not too soft but just...

Ahh, if only we were in Leeds. I went to university in that fine city where chips accompany everything (including Chinese food, curries and anything else one can think of that would normally be accompanied by a different carbohydrate or vegetable). They have them down to a fine art with Bretts in Headingley still frying everything in beef dripping. Not for the diet conscious, health conscious or vegetarians, but my god, they were good chips.


I've not found anywhere nearly as good since so I'm listening keenly to the outcome of this thread.

Nice one. Expecting a FISH and chips shop to do a veggie option is very east dulwich. Maybe they should do a battered nut roast or deep fried breaded rocket and goats cheese. Or maybe they should just stick to selling fish and chips.

OOoooo yes, their fantastic in there, few years back when living in Sydenham I'd go to the hobgoblin for the celeb pub quiz and then pop in there (its next door) and have an open portion of chips to eat on the way home - yummy!!

Golden Anchor in Tooting is really excellent for both fish and chips


When I was living there, friends in E.D decided on a food "off" - E.D Vs Tooting


F&C - Sea Cow Vs Golden Anchor

Chinese - Golden Lee Vs Peters

Indian - Pistachio Club Vs Samrat


Votes were cast for food, service, decor and atmosphere - it was a gruelling contest, and a close run thing

Mushy peas salad tartare sauce and chips would do, just off there myself for birthday meal with chichison and shock Mr Fatfighter !

I struggle to find fish and chips that I enjoy... I'm a southern hemisphere-ite, and we do it differently over there! However last night we went to Sem's on Underhill Rd (where we've been many times before as it's closest) and I really enjoyed the food. Battered sausage was everything you'd expect and the chips were great - just the right level of crispiness on the outside, nice and soft inside.
