We had a bit of a do at the Plough last Saturday following our son's christening - about 80 for a buffet and some drinks. Without exception, everyone said the food was unbeatable - top quality home roasted meats, fish and cakes and plenty of unusual things for veggies.

Given how wonderfully accommodating the management and staff were, the least I can do is give them a bit of free publicity. I know it sometimes seems a long way down Lordship Lane but we've already been back.

There are some teething problems that are too be expected with new staff in a new pub. Putting ice in my whiskey when I didn?t ask for it for instance. :'( But in general the service is friendly and enthusiastic and has been improving.

I think they have done pretty well. Although I would like it if there were some stools at one section of the bar but I suspect there aren?t to keep barflies like me away.

You don?t work there by any chance Mikeb?

Much welcomed addition to upper LL. They've done a great job both inside and out and the staff seem to really care without being over fussed. Only small criticism would be that the food service is a little slow. 25mins for a burger! Can understand on a busy Sunday Lunch but not on a quiet Tuesday lunchtime. However, the food is good. Quite an interesting mix of previous regulars and the new clientel.

It's not my "end" of ED but I go there regularly to play Scrabble and meet up with some others on here. Yes there are teething problems with stuff like till training and you can wait for a long time to get served - even when it's not busy BUT I think it's a fab place - decent, reasonably priced food and Aspall's cider which is a BIG plus point! It's bloody cold in there in the evenings though! Possibly also just teething problems.

I do like the Camembert, which is what i ususally have everytime

Mr. Mogs however is a bit more adventurous and has had almost everything else on the menu. As we find ourselves in there at least twice a week (scrabble commitments), the menu is getting a bit tired. But the food usually very good.

I agree with Davidmc that it was very cold in there on Wednesday.

The Plough is my local and it really is such an improvement on what it was that it seems churlish to complain. It is obviously a much talked about place; the last time it was discussed on here the thread went on for about eleven pages! see here:http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,17464,page=1

I'd like to go there (as it's my local), but being 20 they won't let me in after 6pm. I feel like a sixteen year old again, it's very distressing. I'd quite like to join my folks for drinks on a Sunday. I'm a perfectly civilised person. I hate Over 21 Only policies. Who are they trying to keep out?

I could go during the day on a Sunday (my only free day to enjoy pub joy) but Sunday is sleep day.

After Februrary next year, I'll be able to pass judgement.

I've eaten there a couple of times and won't again (well, I probably will and then moan about it.) I wonder if they're being a bit over ambitious and shouldn't just stick to a big lovely home made soup, steaks, burgers and nice plates of cheese. I had a very funny discussion with the chef when my "fresh" mackerel turned out to be a vaccuum packed smoked and peppered job. I said this isn't a "fresh" mackerel, he said "yes it is, it only got delivered this morning".

Its certainly an improvement on the old place and a nice place for a drink...

They should invent top trumps for Dulwich Pubs.

Decor: They've done a nice job polishing it up. Very spacious. Loads of comfy chairs and corners. 8/10

Food: Good, solid, but nothing special. Though I haven't tried the barbecue specials they do on weekends. ?7-8 a dish 6/10

Atmos: It was quite empty in there on a Friday night. It's empty most evenings. Due to the locations and scant news of its upgrade. 5/10

Families: No kids portions on the meals (I had to buy a full adults bangers @ mash for my daughter). Also no simple foods for kids (i.e. line-caught mackerel with balsamic tomatoes instead of fish finger sandwich with tomato ketchup). Outside area is spacious. Board games inside but not out. 4/10

Booze: Very good selection of beers (fruits, whites, odd Dutch beers). Good wine list. 8/10

Daytime: It's completely empty. So it's a good hangout for writers, parents, loners (of which I am all three). I often go there for a coffee. 7/10

Any other categories?

I used to go in there when I Was little, used to be really cool, bad karoke and all the chavs on cider white and falling over the place! (well I was only young!) but I stopped going when I became a lady because I did not want to be around chavs, now and again I still pop in because it is my local but I have not been in since the face lift but I will give it a go.

I dont rate many of the pubs to be honest, I did love the Black Cherry (though that is not a pub) I didnt like EDT because the people were so unfriendly and miserable (booooooo) but I am not giving up, what is that pub called next to Black Cherry? (yes I should be ashamed of myself as I have lived here forever) they were quite friendly there and there were some nice eye candy...hmmm might give it a go!

Sorry back to the Plough...well it serves drinks and there has never been a bust up when I have been there, does exactly what is says on the tin and that is passable to me!

    • Some employers prefer older people as they are deemed to be more reliable, B and Q at one time had lots of 'older people'. I retired at 66  but on a casual visit to my old department, my former boss offered me a job saying I could name my hours. Would have loved to taken him up on it but the reason I took 'early retirement' was that my arthritis restricted my mobility re walking and standing for periods of time.  I would say it may not be ageism but not being deemed suitable for the position.  Someone I know was always looking for part time work but having spoken to her over a period of years, although she may have had the qualifications  needed for the work, her general attitude towards others and her very set views, I could understand why she found paid employment difficult to achieve. Can you do voluntary work? This may give you additional transferable skills.
