My teenage son is keen to learn the sax but I don't want to buy an instrument until we see how he gets on - can anyone recommend somewhere I could hire one please? Or if someone has one that their child has cast off - perhaps I could have a long loan and we'd pay you instead?

Thank you!

Not the best selections of saxes but... https://www.howarth.uk.com/rental.aspx

Do not be fooled by thinking they're just a double reed (oboe/bassoon etc) special ist, they have a big section devoting to saxes too. I've not used Howarth's for rental and have not been in a while but they offer great advise and customer service to those in the know and complete novices.

Also ask at South London Music in Grove Vale (www.slmusic.co.uk). They deal with lots of kids from the Saturday music school at Goose Green and I'm sure they do instrument rental.

Failing that, for specialists, I'd second Howarth's. I've bought a couple of saxes there and always had good service despite being fairly amateur.

    • I’ve searched and found some chat back in October about the white stuff place closing and that Oliver Bonas could take it over.  Hopefully that’s the case. Went to Bromley over Christmas and there’s quite a few shop closures on the main high street that weren’t there when I last went. Think it could be going the same way as Croydon sadly.
    • the sign outside does say 'coming back soon'  but may be at another location?
    • There was some discussion about that on here when White Stuff closed, but I can't see how to link to it. If you do a search on Oliver Bonas the posts will come up. One said Oliver Bonas was closing as well, and another one said it might now take over the White Stuff site. But that was quite a while ago, so who knows.
    • Thanks Ianr.  I've attached a screenshot of the bit where East Dulwich is mentioned. But why are they still calling it East Dulwich delivery office? It hasn't been in East Dulwich since the delivery office in Sylvester Road was closed. I wonder what "targeted support" they are providing to the East Dulwich aka Peckham office, and what "challenges" they think it has?
