I could probably add a couple of years to my life if I never played the following games:

Defender (Arcade)

Asteroids (Arcade)

Prince of Persia (commodore 64)

PGA Golf (PC)

Civilization (PS2)

PGR (Xbox)

Age of Empires (Mac)

Civ 4 (Mac)

GT1, GT2, GT3, GT4 Prologue, GT4, GT5 demo (PS1,2&3)

I spend many a weekend with the first 2 GT's and was salivating over the 3rd... but by then I realised apart from the graphics I wasn't seeing enough evolution. Keeping an open mind for 5 tho

anyone play Microprose Golf on the Amiga - That was the golf game for me. Then I went on to PGA, and when I sqw PGA 486 on the PC I thought it would be impossible for them to get any better

You can still play it on the PC. There's a bunch of engines that will play the old files for you.

Also Microprose jogged my memory. X-Com. How could I have forgotten! I still enjoy playing it. I haven't found a game since that does that kind of squad based combat.

I play quake 3, a mod of it called Threewave and a mod of call of duty called united offensive. Somehow i got into it from a demo off a cd i was given..quake 3 . Guess it was about 2001. I liked tomb raider 3. So my nearest and dearest thought I would enjoy the proper version of quake 3. Initially was into 'how it all works' but a couple of years later I was pumping my broad band , tweaking for accuracy and have been to Lan parties in california,50 or so people connected in one building. Am an admin on some gameservers and have some very fun friends all from these games. Now I have less time for this tho. i usually play in high ping scenarios (usa gameservers where my gaming friends are)but if anyone fancies a go on uk servers of quake/call of duty/unreal Im up fo it. Only play off computer though.Message me or whatever and we'll find a server.

Wow, hadn't noticed this before! Got a good 29 years of gaming behind me too, thankfully I study more and game less these days :)) the DS is great, but since the Saturn died I personally reckon that a good 90% of all games produced for consoles are boring and a complete waste of my time, hence sticking to the DS on the bus and Mame and its ilk for a decent pixel rush. I mean all that unlockable nonsense these days, and for what? Don't even get me started on RPGs and random battles..Is it really worth backtracking and repeating levels? Not really worth wasting any of my life on that nonsense. As the market has "matured" it seems cgi scenes and missions have replaced the entire point of games - to be fun. I know the PSP has improved a hell of a lot recently in terms of quality software, but for me the DS is an amazing bit of kit, especially for multiplayer games. Hell I'm even practising Yoga and Pilates by using DS software, there are also wine tasting, beauty and personality testing titles for it, but I digress.

Guess its that "getting old" thang. Meh so much for progress, I doubt the gaming scene will ever be as exiting as in the Pc Engine/Superfamicom/Megadrive era, that was a golden time indeed :)-D

This isn't a bad article, it is hardly accurate, but is a pleasant enough trip down memory lane:

This is a great game:

I love it to bits, although its a shame they put more classical music rather than the old folk tunes they included on previous arcade and Playstation versions, probably due to the popularity of the Nodame Cantabile Drama http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Nodame_Cantabile (based on the comic) which I can also highly recommend.

Here is a nice video of the famous (and very much overpriced, thanks to the legions of French and American tourists who locust strip places like this to re-sell on ebay) Super Potato in Akihabara.

There are plenty of better and cheaper places, especially in the suburbs and outside Tokyo (there are a good few retro places in and around Sapporo for example who are far cheaper)...

Oh, did anyone else see "The king of Kong"? http://www.billyvssteve.com/ it starts out pretty boring but picks up momentum and if you grew up when the first games were black and white, then it's a really good watch. The whole cult of Twin Galaxies does look a bit creepy though to put it mildly. If you can't find it on dvd, like pretty much everything, it can be found in ye underwurdle :))

Anyone ever play the orignial Quake: Team Fortress? I hold that responsible for consuming most of my early gaming years. The game that really started it all was The Secret of Monkey Island, not many things have made me laugh so much. Ron "Monkey Island" Gilbert is working on a new game called Deathspank and I'm crossing my fingers and toes it'll be good.

Mine too. I can still hear the whines that playing scout (rushing past everyone to release the gas in The Rock) is cheating!

    • Labour was right not to increase fuel duty - it's not just motorists it affects, but goods transport. Fuel goes up, inflation goes up. Inflation will go up now anyway, and growth will stagnate, because businesses will pass the employee NIC hikes onto customers.  I think farms should be exempt from the 20% IHT. I don't know any rich famers, only ones who work their fingers to the bone. But it's in their blood and taking that, often multi-generation, legacy out of the family is heart-breaking. Many work to such low yields, and yet they'll often still bring a lamb to the vet, even if the fees are more than the lamb's life (or death) is worth. Food security should be made a top priority in this country. And, even tho the tax is only for farms over £1m, that's probably not much when you add it all up. I think every incentive should be given to young people who want to take up the mantle.
